NEW YORK (U.R) The Dun
& Bradstreet wholesale food price
index dropped 13 cents in the
week which ended Tuesday. It
was the widest break in more
than seven months.
The drop cut the index to $5.72,
lowest since Juiy 19, and wiped
out most of a net gain of 19
cents since the Index started ris
ing on July 12. This week last
year, the index stood at $6.82.
Breaks in the prices of edible
oils and declines in grain and
livestock markets were largely re
sponsible for the big drop.
The previous widest decline
;ws 1 drop of 22 cents In the
.week ended Feb 8.
i Of the 31 food? used in com
! piling the index, 17 moved down
i ward, 11 were unchanged, and
three increased. The index is the
sum total of the wholesale price
I per pound of each.
I The commodities which declin
1 ed were flour, wheat, coin, rye,
oats, barley, hams, lard, cotton-.
seed oil, cocoa, beans rice, steers,
hogs, lambs and butter.
