Selling Whiskey
Brings Sentence
Glen Floyd Braley. 23. of Flor
ence was sentenced to 80 day in
jail and a fine of (100 Thursday
after he pleaded guilty In district
court to a charge of furnishing
liquor to minora.
Braley wis arretted following
the arrest and committal to the
state training school of four Flor
ence youths who admitted slug
ging and robbing Lauren Swigert
the night of July 23.
The boys said they asked Braley
to buy whlfkey for them, and that
the robbery was committed while
they were drinking.
While hearing the Juvenile case,
Judge G. F. Sklpworth had ob
served that the man who fur
nished the whiskey to the boys
was partially to blame for their
crime.

of a Siamese princess has hit the
costume jewelry market.

Plans Okayed

Virgil M. Cameron, chairman of
the board, a?ked the following
question:
"Have you undertaken any ad
ditional work since our agree.
ment with you?" (He referred to
an agreement supposed to have
been made between Smith and the
board to the effect that Smith
would be allowed to complete the
few jobs on which he was then
engaged; but that no new, addi
tional work would be undertaken
during the time he was engaged
on plans for the new Eugene High
School).
Smith's answer was frank and
to the point. Eleven persons in the
room heard him tay:
"111 have to be honest with you.
I have put out 'feelers' and have
done additional work; but it would
be awfully hard for you to prove
it."
Explains All
He explained that his office staff
of four persons in addition to him
self had to earn their "bread and
butter." He told the board mem
bers that hit salaries at his office
run more than $400 per week, and
that he could not afford to pay his
help unless he had undertaken
additional work.
During the remainder of the
evening Cameron repeatedly
brought up the question, and asked
whether Smith would adhere to
hit contract if allowed to proceed
with the work on high school
plans.
Smith gave the board his word
that he would not undertake ad
ditional work and laid that he has
a "couple" more Jobs underway
now, and that as soon as these are
completed, his staff will work full
time, on high school plans.
Short on Help
He explained that it was neces
sary to undertake additional
architectural work during the past
few months because school board
demands, that his original plans be
changed so extensively, compelled
him to put his men to work in
other jobs. Only one man could
possibly work on present high
school plans, he said, and told the
board they were responsible for
setting back the development of
the new school by five months
through their insistence in reduc
ing the size of the building.
The first plans called for 450,
OM square feet area, while his
plan presented Wednesday night
covered 273,903 square feet.

superintendent of schools; Dean
Lobaugh, assistant superintendent
in charge of instruction; L. L.
Erdmann, assistant superintendent
in charge of physical properties
and purchasing; Dean Mlckelwait,
principal of E.H.S.; and Paul Pot
ter, vice-principal of E.H.S.

important chairmanships of the
Munition Board and of the Na
tional Security Resource Board.
Name Listed
These sources, unquotable by
name, said Mr. Truman plans to
nominate Tracy Voorhees, now an
assistant secretary, for undersec
retary of the Army.
This nomination, they added,
likely will be accompanied by that
of Archibald Alexander, unsuc
cessful Democratic candidate for
the U. S. Senate from New Jersey
last year, to be an assistant sec
retary of the Army.
The third important pott was
listed for Marx Leva, special as
sistant and general counsel to
Secretary of Defense Johnson.
Leva is slated to become an as
sistant secretary of the depart
ment of defense under unification
legislation for which Mr. Truman
it pressing Congress.
Candidate Balks
Meanwhile, White House source
said that Ward Canaday, Toledo,
Ohio, manufacturer, is balking at
becoming chairman of the muni
tions board.
Canaday, chairman of the
finance committee of the Willys
Overland Co., and American
chairman of the Caribbean com
mission, was offered the munitions
post some week ago.
The chairmanship of the Na
tional Security Resources Board
has also been vacant since the
resignation of Arthur Hill, bus
company executive, months ago.
Mr. Truman nominated hit old
friend, Former Gov. Mon Wall
gren of Washington, for the post,
but withdrew the nomination when
it ran up against opposition in the
Senate.

An elaborate big-time gambling
casino, equipped with a steel look
out tower, was raided by state
police who arrested 165 men and
seized $38,700.
At least 15 of the suspect were
described by police as "kingpin
gamblers" in New Jersey.
Acting on a tip, a detail of 18
ttate troopers surrounded the one
story concrete gambling house
early Thursday morning. They
sneaked past the lookout tower
under cover of darkness, battered
down doors and broke into the
building with drawn gun.
Some of the troopers rounded
up customers and gamblers, while
others seized the "bank." There
were no shot fired.
The suspects were taken to the
Chester Township Municipal
Building for booking. Arrange
ment were made for them to get
hearings before police recorders.
The turprite raid, under the di
rection of Capt. Arthur Keaton,
head of the N.J. state police crim
inal section, had been planned in
advance, but trooper said the
gamblers were caught red-handed.
The casino, in a new building
on the outskirts of this small com
munity of 6000 population, was
described as a "lavish setup" com
pletely furnished with gambling
devices. Several guns and a supply
of bullets Were confiscated by
police from guards posted around
the establishment
