T. Compton compares the present
development of atomic energy to
that of steam power when "Watt
first noticed the lid of the kettle
bumping up and down."
Dr. Compton la heading a party
of the Research and Development
Board of the National Military
Establishment on an Inspection
tour of the Hanford works here.
On hand for the four-day tour
were scientist. Industrialists, and
military personnel. They were to
confer with key officials at the
Plutonium plant.
Plants First Goal
"Although atomic power is only
seven years old, It will be much
more rapidly developed than
steam power or other methods,"
Dr. Compton said. "The imme
diate goal ahead is development
of smal'. efficient power plants
which can use atomic power eco
nomically." The former president of Mas
sachusetts Institute of Technology
said the intense concentration on
atomic power in the U.S. is due
to the fact that twice as much
power per capita is used here
then in any other nation on earth.
"This souroe of power will not
deteriorate with time," he said.
"It is a million times more pro
ductive of power than coal. It
will be usable a thousand years
from now for either war or
peace."
Civilian members of the inspec
tion party are William Webster,
chairman of the Research Board's
Committee on Atomic Energy; Dr.
0. T. Eelbeck vioe-persident of
the Carbide Chemical Corp.; Dr.
Robert Rinehard, executive sec
retary of the board; H. A. Winne,
vice president of General Electric,
and W. H. Hosford, retired vice
president of Western Electric.
