MUlmi f oft Backers To Stage Rally PORTLAND (IP) A public ral. ly in support of Sheriff Mike El- liott has been called for Sunday. Recall petitions are being cir culated against Elliott. Leaflets distributed Monday called tne meeting for Sunday at- ternoon in a public park. They said the sponsor was the Legal Defense Movement, an organiza tion known also as the Citizens' Action Committee. County Democratic Central Committee chairman Nicholas Granet, who last week said he was Elliott s spokesman in all mat' ters connected with the recall, said he had no knowledge of the rally. The leaflets urged opposition to "invisible government" that had already put a Democratic county treasurer out of office after his election last November. They said the same forces were working to out the young Democratic sheriff. 'Tor the love of Mike, come and bring your friends," the an nouncement said. Meanwhile, recall committee chairman T. L. Gatch; retired vice admiral, said about 2200 signatures on recall election petitions had been sent to county election offic ials for verification. another $600,000,000 to $625,000, 000. He wants to cut back an $825,000,000 sum previously ap proved by Congress for stockpil ing critical and strategic materials such as metals, rubber, quinine, pepper, castor oil and a long list of other supplies. Thomas calls ihe five-year post war stockpiling plans "cockeyed" but defense officials and Senators from western mining states are op posing him. The hitherto confidential com mittee report outlined particular targets for economy, including: 1. Reduction in the flying time required for "administrative and proficiency flying by the Air Force and Navy" especially for flying officers on desk Jobs. It complain' ed that Air Force "desk pilots" us. ed large two-motored aircraft that cost from $60 to $100 an hour to operate. . It suggested smaller planes be used. S. A cutback In flyinf time for guard and reserve efficero of the Air Force now listed for 128 and 100 hours each year. Navy reserve pilots train on 80 hours a year, the Senate was told. I. The large numbers of Nary shore stations and Army posts, Secretary of Defense Johnson was advised to get rid of inactive or partially active installations, al though this usually draws a scream of protests from local com. mlttees and their congressmen. 4. Use of heavy military-type vehicles for light pick-up opera tions" was criticized. Dorena Dam Work Resumes Next Week Concrete work on Dorena Dam on the Row River near Cottage Grove will resume next week, W. A. Schwarz, resident engineer, announced Thursday. He said concrete work would be going on now except for difficul ties encountered in "borrowing a machine operator from the Mc Nary project at Umatilla. Concrete must be poured in a 60-foot section of the dam, left open as a "safety valve" in case unexpected high water or work stoppage should endanger the earth-fill section of the dam. Mine Union - Agrees to 7-H CHICAGO m After two years' refusal, the CIO Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers executive board has voted to have the union's officers sign non-Communist affidavits. Such affidavits are required by the Taft-Hartley Law of any union using the facilities of the National Labor Relations Board. An executive board statement said the union "has steadfastly maintained its boycott" of the NLRB for two years but that two recent developments forced a change in this policy. The statement listed them as: "1. The shameful betrayal of labor's fight for repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act, and as part of that betrayal, "2. The adoption of raiding, gangsterism and strike-breaking as official policy by reactionaries in the leadership of the CIO."
