family, has roamed all over the
county on his home-made legs. He
has even wandered , across the
British Isles, but he wants to
spend his last days at home.
As the wearv old man crossed
the bridge at Steubenville, Ohio,
he missed a turn and headed for
Weirton instead of Parkersburg
along Route 2. Wobbling along the
road, he was nearly struck twice
by motorists, who notified police
01 naro s wnereabouu and condition.
Sheriffs in Action
The Hancock Countv sheriff
telephoned Sheriff Hogg of
Brooke County and asked for a
deputy to meet him and Karo in
Follansbee W. Va.
From Follansbee. the "Parkers
burg Traveller" was taken to
Wheeling by an Ohio County dep
uty. At Wheeling, he was fed and
given a bus ticket to Parkersburg.
The "pony express" had done its
job.
During the ride through Ohio
County, the octogenarian was re
luctant to talk about his past.
frozen In Billiard
Indicating his wooden legs, he
said, "I froze the good ones off in
the big blizzard of 1909 in Mon
tana. Didn't think I'd pull through
that, but I did.
"Made these I got on myself,"
he confided. "Carved them out of
white willow. White willow's the
best material for store legs. Better
than that plastic and aluminum
stuff they're using."
Karo admitted to better days.
"Was a machinst for the rail
roads. Worked on most of them.
Now I have to walk, but I can't
walk much further. Guess it's
time to go back after all. None of
my people left, though, uniy
