Deschutes Dam PORTLAND, Ore. OI.R) The Oregon State Fish Commission Tuesday took no action on a pro posal by the Northwest Power Supply Co. to build a dam on the Deschutes river in central Ore gon. Commissioners, who met and reappointed Arnie J. Suomela for a second four-year term as master fish warden, said they had not yet received an application from the northwest group and, therefore, were not prepared to discuss the proposal. A spokesman said a recommen dation could not be passed to the Hydro - Electric Commission of Oregon until formal papers have been filed. Fishermen and packer groups recommended to the commission a 38 hour closing period through out the year and a close of the season on Dec. 1 Instead of Dae. 15. Irishman Trys Long Boat Trip CORDOVA, Alaska OP) An adventrous Irishman, who took his cue from the South Pacific, arrived here safely Tuesday on the first leg of a risky North Pa cific canoe trip tn Seattle. Pat Murphy, Fairbanks car penter, hopes to complete the voyage in three months with his outrigger craft, made by lashing together two 18-foot lightt canoes. An outboard motor provides the power. He started last Friday from Valdez, approximately 100 miles to the north, came down Valdez Arm and into the Gulf of Alaska. Half of this leg was in the us ually turbulent gulf. Ahead of him Is another 400 miles of open water before he reaches the semi-protected inside passage through a chain of islands. This will be Murphy's third major canoe voyage. In 1930 he went down the Mississippi river from St. Paul, Minn., and then crossed the Gulf of Mexico to St. Petersburg, Fla.
