Television Poll Shows Owners Forsake Movies By Patricia Clary UP Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD IU.B Tele vision set owners have told the movie industry that they are staying away from movies and may never come back. Some of the 1800 owners said better pictures would lure them out of the living room. But a lot said producers who wanted to get them past the box office would have to "break my set." Can See Them Free "I can see the same trash at . home, free," said one of the Los. 11 Angeles residents interviewed by Woodbury College in the nation's largest television poll. The survey among representa- tive television viewers showed " . . that 77 per cent of them weren't going to the movies so much. Eighty per cent of them added 1, . that they hardly ever turn their 1 -radios on at night either. Movie producers might win them back with good pictures, 34.6 said. Lower prices would help. . in the opinion of 11.8 per cent. . Twenty-one per cent said they were gone for good. Long Enough' "The movies have been fleecing me long enough," one man said. A 20-year-old suggested that theaters cut their prices to his level. "Then I might go when I have - -the money," he said. The best thing for the movies r, to do, the TV fans agreed, was make some good pictures to show them at home. The largest single group 25 per cent said they'd prefer to see good movies on tele- vision to even Milton Berle. And 60 per cent said they'd pay a fee ' from 25 cents to $1 a picture. Costs as Much A little over half of the set owners admitted that staying home from the movies wasn't sav ing them any money. They spend more than the ticket price on v pretzels and beer. Moviegoing has suffered more ; from television than other out-of the-home activities, the survey showed. Only 65 per cent said they had cut down on paying visits t outside events. -Thorough Sample Advertising Professor Harold Every, who supervised the survey, said the sampling of 1800 owners among Los Anleges' 140,000 sets.'" was relatively greater than Gal- ' lup s. It turns out, he added, that poorer ' people have relatively more television sets than the rich , ones. The survey Incidentally unoov-r ered good news for the National Safety Council. Eighty-Six per cent of set owners do not wish ; lo watch television while driving.
