A request for vacation of Collier St. in the City Outlook addition will be considered, New Oregon Town Appears DETROIT, Ore. VP) Oregon has a new if temporary town, and its name is Mongold. It is the community springing up near the site of the Detroit Dam, now under construction. There plans are being laid to take care of the estimated 1000 work men who will be hired when dam construction gets under way fully. A sewage system, disposal plant, street system and a school have been completed. Forty-eight apartments and four dormitories also will be erected. The town of Detroit will be covered with water when the dam is completed. Traffic Deaths Are Unlicensed In Oregon, the traffic of unli censed drivers are nearly three times as likely to be fatal as those of valid license holders. Although licensed drivers are responsible for the lion's share of all accidents and deaths, the rec ord reveals a difference in the le thal quality, of their mishaps when compared with those of unlicensed drivers, according to the secretary of state's office. Using figures for Oregon resi dents only. It is reported that li censed fata drivers numbered 368 in a total of 104,924 involved accidents last year. The ratio of non-fatal to fatal drivers was ap proximately 284 to one. Unlicens' ed death drivers totalled 39 out of 4014 involved in accidents for a ratio of 102 to one. It was pointed out that unlicens ed drivers include those who have allowed their permits to expire as well as those who have never held a valid permit. Those In the first category have been steadily in creasing since the staggered li cense renewal program went into effect in June, 1947, after a war time extension of expiration. Drivers holding licenses with a "5R" numerical prefix are urged to obtain renewal schedules from their police station or driver's ex aminer office. All such licenses will have expired by the end of May. Those who wait too long to renew may be required to pass the original driver's examination be fore receiving a valid permit. Briggs said he was stepping aside so that voters could judge Councilmen John Daugherty, John Nosier and Herbert Fischborn on their own merits in a recall elec tion next Thursday. Briggs sid he feared some op position to him might reflect against the councilmen if he stay ed in office. Briggs and Police Chief Clar ence Williams were the immediate causes of the fight between the council and Mayor Tom Williams. When the mayor attempted to re place them, the council blocked him. If so. engineers will be able to hold back 1.1.' feet in the event of a Willamette River flood.
