INGRAM ISLAND REPORT INGRAM ISLAND School at tendance was small here last week because of chicken pox and measles. Barney Elder, James Mc Cann, and Bruce McCann have chicken pox. Dorothy Haffner has been quite ill with measles. Jole Fawver was absent all last week with a bad cold. Little Marvin Morse is also 111 with chicken pox. School visitors last, were were: the county school superintendent, Mrs. Helen Baker on Wednesday; and on Thursday Clifford George, chairman of the Monroe grade school board of directors, and the new Monroe grade school princi pal, Lawrence Brent. Personals Harold Lister left recently on a business trip to Bakersfield, Calif. Mrs. Edmund Crowson under went an operation this past Thurs day for appendicitis. Visiting here recently at the Herman Morse home were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Schaffer and his mother, of Portland. Schaffer and his mother returned to Portland, but Mrs. Schaffer remained for a longer visit. Winter Colder, Animals Boldei By Margaret Benston WESTFIR Folks at Westfi are getting uneasy: the animal are getting "out of hand" in thi forests which surround the towr since the cold weather. Bears, coy otes and bobcats have been seen: cougar tracks abound: there i: some talk that the animals may be in league to descend on the place some fine day and run the hu mans clear out of town. Overt acta of the more daring animals: At the LeoLawson home, one morning last week, Mrs. Lawsoni discovered a jar of jam had been' eaten. She took the matter up with the Head of the House, who stead fastly denied the crime, attribut ing the guilt to "some rat." The Lawsons set a trap. Later that evening, Mrs. Law-; son being alone in the house, she heard a noise in the pantry. Rifle , in hand, she investigated. She pointed the rifle at the! noise, and gave it the works. The criminal turned out to be: I A skunk. The experience of the Lawsons however is overshadowed by the; prolonged struggle with the mal-i evolent animal insurrection, in I which the Howard Wessner lam-1 ily is now engaged. The beavers have got 'em. The gnawsome little animals i have destroyed fence after fence, j as fast as the Wessners can build fences. They have eaten all the! chickens' winter kale out of the: garden, and felled a big tree in the chicken yard with evident in tent to smash the chicken house. Thereafter they went next door to the Harry Anthony home where they did eat or cause to be eaten each and every one of the straw berry plants belonging and ap pertaining to the said Harry An thony family, and they did there after sneak up to the window of the Anthony bedroom, at the hour of 3 aim. and did then and there cut down a tree. Furthermore they stood their ground boldly and re fused to desist even when shoes and alarm clocks were thrown, and retreated sullenly under cloak of darkness only when Mr. An- thony got up and attacked them with a double-bitted axe. . Roy Benston of Vida recently reported seeing his two dogs, two cats, and a wild skunk all snoozing together in the sun, in his back yard. Fears are therefore being entertained that the domestic animals may Join the incipient conspiracy, and it is hoped that the idea does not spread to such sizeable animals of the rugged McKenzie country as cows, horses, deer, cougars, bears, and elk. GARDEN CLUB WESTFIR The election of two officers and the selection of date for another public card party were the main items of business before the recent meeting of the "Westflr Garden Club. Mrs. Marlon Kilbreath, who ex pects to move from this com munity soon, tendered her resig nation as president Mrs. M. L. Hendricks, vice president, will as sume that office and Mrs. B. J. Cole was named to succeed Mrs. Hendricks. Mrs. Ernest Correa was elected to fill out Mrs. Ralph Hinkle's term as treasurer. The latter resigned at the December meeting, but the vacancy was not filled at that time because of the small attendance at the meeting. Saturday evening, Feb. It. the date selected for the club's second publlo card party. Mrs. W. D. Hoist, ways and means chairman, will again head the committee making arrange ments. Mrs. John' Hough; secretary, made t detailed report of the dis trict Garden Club meeting held in Junction City.
