Many persons planning their first home do not know the differ ence, or understand what to ex pect from an architect or designer. An architect in Oregon Is the legal term for a man who has had five years' experience, five years of school, and has passed a very complete series of examinations covering design, architectural his tory, structural design and other subjects. The architect Is capable of turn Ing out a very complete, set of plans, specifications and of doing a good job of supervision on eon' struction. He usually charge on a percentage basis of the final cost of construction. Other persons also design houses. They are known a re signers, and are not licensed a architect are. Their background in design vary from none to nearly as much as a licensed architect Their services usually end with the drawing of the plan and some times of the specifications. They charge a flat fee for work by the hour. Larger Romea For persons building larger homes, the services of an architect are essential. A person planning a small home can frequently find a designer who will turn out a plan at a reasonable figure. Plan vary in quality. Many of those available through plan ser vices have just the bare essential, and persons buying these some times find they are charged more by the contractor as it takes more of his time to figure out the essen tial detail. Some designer houses have very complete plans with which contractors are glad to work. j Architect-designed houses are usually the best in detail and spec I ifled fittings. Also the "plan book" i plan are not suited to everybody, j Changes are frequently made, and 1 sometimes not until something has already been done on the strue ; hire. In a good designer or architect. , designed house those details art taken care of by the artist at the time of drawing the plans. HEAVY DUTY APBOK j A sturdy general utility apron has been designed to give added : protection for laundry work, can ning and other chore where a water-resistant apron is necessary, j Made of plastic, the apron I : strong and long-wearing, resistant to mildew, fruit stain, add and alcohol. Pea definitely are a cool weather crop and will tolerate amazingly low temperatures. This vegetable is not over-sensitive to soil conditions, growing equally well under a wide range of condi tions. The planting depth varies with the time of planting and also the texture of the soil. During the cooler part of the year and On heavy soil the seed should be set no deeper than one half Inch. In wanner weather and in light soils the seed may be IE v m mm ill i. ll.-Si. li -mm nssuultLaaeal prove disastrous. Crowding peas or any other crop is not exactly good planting technique. The seed may bo started in furrows that are fairly wide. This will help prevent crowding. If the soil is thoroughly irrigat ed prior to planting there will be sufficient moisture in the soil to force the seedlings above the sur face. Sprinkling the land after planting may cause a crust to form on the surface. This is known as baking of the soil. The seedlings may find it impossible to push through such a hard strata. If pos sible hold off watering until the young plants are two Inches high. Irrigation is the best way of wat ering plants. It i advisable to plant the seed In single rows and this is especial ly true If the vines are to be trel lised. Space the rows thirty Inches apart as closer planting may BAST PLANT CARE Plant care is easier with the new, decorative water-resistant flower pot containers made of plastic rigid sheet, eliminating the need for paper trimming and un derline and making possible the easier watering of plants. The potted plant is kept in the plastic container, into which water is poured so that the plant re ceives the necessary moisture by absorption. The container -will not break when dropped and Is resist ant to warping, grease, oils, chem ical and abrasion. It comes in various size and color. i Do not cultivate depely around rhododendron and azalea, be cause the feeding roots near the surface are likely to be injured. A dog going at full speed ipends one-half of his time in the air. Used Frames Make Tables Perhaps you have an old ploture or mirror frame that is just tak ing up waste space in the attic or basement. With a little work, a little money (or both), this frame can be made Into an attractive coffee table. Round or oval frames well as square ones To begin with, if frames- are very ornate, be sure they are not constructed partly of plaster. Thi will chip badly. The frames should be of all-wood construction. Take out the picture or mirror, and sand the frame. If you are clever, you may then Insert a piece of masonite in the center, fitting it tightly against the back of the frame. A piece of plywood cut to fit and placed over the masonite gives additional strength. Home carpenters will be able to put on legs themselves, but others will find It wise to patron ize one of the local craft shops where the work can be done at not too great an expense. After the carpentry work Is done, the table may be painted any color. A flat or satin finish look best. After landing" tha table well, apply a coat of filler. On top of thi add two coats of flat color (black 1 very strik ing). Then add two coat of var nish, and finish off with one eoat of satln-flnlsh 'vamlsh. Persons who prefer a glossy fin ish may use a regular enamel and finish eff with a couple of coats of heat and stain roslstapt varnish. Building Paper Helps Keep Floors Warm Are the floors in your house coid? One way to keep cold air rrom infiltrating through from be low is to tack building paper on the under side of the joists. Simply take the roll of paper under the house, and tack It di rectly to the JolsU. Tack it solid covering up pipes, etc. This will stop quite a bit of the cold, damp air from entering through the floor, and will protect joists and flooring from termites and dam aging dampness. Beaverron Mayor Tells Tap Water Dangers BEAVERTON (U.R) Mayor H. H. Jeffries Friday warned resl dents not to drink tap water with out boiling it for fear of typhoid infection. The mayor Issued the warning at the request of Dr. C. E. Mason, city health officer who tested water samples. Beaverton schools were closed.
