Big chain stores reported In creased sales volume over last year. Nevertheless, they were watching closely a price war among Indianapolis groceries. Housewives there have cashed in on a $2,000,000 battle of coupons between chain stores and independents. Most grocery trade sources felt that the Indianapolis situation had little economic significance. They sad it indicated no impending re cession in the grocery business. But many trade expert felt it was indicative of the state of mind of smaller independents. Although the Indianapolis price war was localized, grocery leaders felt it proved one thing that competi tion has returned to the grocery business. Miss Hose M. Kiefer, secretary of the National Assn. of Retail Grocers, said coupon prograrns were "unnecessary from an ecO' nomic point of view,!' and that most independents don't like them. . She quoted U. S. Commerce De partment figures showing that as of Sept. 6, both dollar volume and unit sales were up for the grO' eery business as a whole. Miss Kiefer said the prospects for the coming holiday trade were better than last year. F. J. Lunding, president of the Jewel Tea Chain, said business Is "good, but returning to nor mal." He referred to his state ment of a month ago that prices had reached their peak and would come down in an orderly adjustment. "As far as the grocery business is concerned," he said, "I don't see anybody carrying a tin cup around." Grocers in most cities said the same thing. They said it was a buyer's market on most items. At New York, the Grocery Manufac turers of America said sales vol ume would indicate that the busi ness has not yet attained the status of a general buyer's market. But spokesmen acknowledged that there is some caution in wholesale buying. Retailers generally are laying in 50-day supplies instead of stocking up for 90 days, they said. implement Thanksgiving Festivities i SIERRA CAN DYl $0O Pound Box After that turkey dinner with all the "fains' you'll want to top it off with SIERRA after dinner Mints . . . zestful confections that add the final touch to a perfect dinner.
