Boeing Airplane Company offi cials indicated, however, that it may be well over a year before the spectacular six-engine bomb er rolls off the production line in quantity. 29,000 Workers J. E. Schaefer, vice president in charge of Boeing's Wichita opera tion estimated that 29,000 wom ers will be needed to build Strato jets. That equals the peak em ployment of Boeing here during the war. But this time, Schaefer told a group of writers on an air force sponsored visit to aircraft factories In the West, only 15,000 men and women will be hired for the Wich ita plant. The rest of the work will be sub-contracted outside of Wichita to avoid disturbing too seriously the labor market here. Recruiting Begun Boeing already has begun, a re cruitment proeram in the Wichita area and will extend it to neigh boring states as the job gels underway. The program calls for 656,400 man-hours of production engi neering on the B-47 a ten month job for 400 men. Another 400 en. gineers will be needed for other phases of the overall task. Two B-47's have been built at Seattle, Wash. The plane is rated by the Air Force in the "600 miles an hour class." Unofficially it is reported to be able to outrun any American warplane except the North American F-86, which set the world speed record at 870 miles an hour without using full power. The Air Force has announced it will buy ten B-47's, but the pro. gram outlined for the plant here involves many times that number, However, Schaefer said that at the moment Boeing has no' contract and nothing which would rail for reimbursement if the plan failed to materialize. AAF Wants Ten He described the B-47 as a more "produceable" plane than, the B-29;'that is, it fits well into mass assembly methods. Removal of the B-47 project to Wichita was due in part at least to the general desire of military planners to disperse aircraft pro duction and in particular to kep vital projects away from the na tion's borders. The industry now is largely concentrated on the East and West coasts. Contrary to popular belief, pumpkins do not mix with water melons and muskmelons. The crops may be planted safely side by side. Eisendrath, Jr., sec retary of the Civil War Round Table of Chicago, says some of Wills' ideas were adopted by Lincoln. He offers evidence to support his views in a study completed just before the 85th annlvresary of the famous speech of Nov. 19, 1863. Wills was head of a commission in charge of the dedication of the soldiers cemetery on the Gettys burg battlefield. He wrote an in vitation to Lincoln. "The President must have re ferred to the Wills letter as he prepared his talk," Eisendrath says, - He finds a "striking similarity" in certain passages. 'Certainly, he concludes, "it seems that the President made a very noteworthy attempt to fol low out Wills' suggestions." Wills asked Lincoln to make a "few remarks." Lincoln spoke for only two min utes. "His invitation to be a speaker was not put in the mails until Nov. 2 only 17 days before the event."
