Decorator Touch'
Easily Gained
In Any Room
Occasional furniture the small
pieces give life and interest to
a room. An occasional piece isn't
a poor relation and shouldn't be
treated as such.
It should have the same social
standing as the large pieces, which
are, after all, only the skeleton
of the room.
Give your room shape and form
with large pieces, but use occa
sional pieces to fill in the details
and round out Hs proportions.
Furnish a room with sofas, chairs
and chests and it will look bare.
Tables are needed, not only 10
make it livable, but to make it
whole.
A lonely sofa should be flanked
by two tilt tables or lamp stades.
Wall space at the side of a door
won't look so naked if you place
a commode there with a mirror
above it.
Regardless of the dimensions or
type of your house, you can find
appropriate tables to meet your
practical and decorative needs.
End tables, chairside tables, coffee
tables, magazine tables, consoles
and card tables not all of these,
of course, but a well selected few j
wil make a room iook more in
viting. Many of the tables on the mar
ket today have been faithfully
fashioned after original models.
You can get them in rich mahog
any, oak, walnut, pine, and any of
the fruitwoods.
Monroe's New
But Growing
One of the newest furniture
businesses in Eugene, Monroe's,
at 666 Willamette St., was found
ed two years ago by Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Monroe.
The Monroe's, Frank and Betty,
originally hailed from Nebraska.
They expanded operations three
months ago and opened up a
branch store in Oakridge under
the managership of Mr .and Mrs.
Joseph Kocer.
The furniture line consists of
Karpen products, Rose City, and
B. P. Johns models. In addition,
there is a radio and appliance de
partment. Radio models include Sparton,
General Electric, Admiral and
Farnsworth. A complete supply of
General Electric and Admiral ap
pliances are featured.
Mr. and Mrs. Monroe are active
in operating the store and have a
sales force of nine persons to as
sist. Lloyd Bradshaw, assistant to
the owners, is in charge when they
are out of town.

It's a magic room I By careful choice o! furniture and accessories, the above illustration proves that It M
possible to combine living-dining-sloeping quarters and still have an attractive well-appointed room.
Radios Have
Double Duty
A radio is no longer just a radio.
Today it frequently combinej a
variety of other features.
For instance, there is a hand
some new piano which is not only
a fine musical instrument, but also
a radio and phonograph! This
triple duty instrument has built
in drawers on either side. Pull out
one drawer and you have a radio,
pull out the other and you get' a
phonograph.
Tired? Crawl into bed with a
good book, and turn on the bed
lamp attached to the headboard.
Just twist a dial on the Imip and
you can also listen to the radio.
Yes, it's a combination bedlamp
and radio. The light is at the best
angle for reading without eye
strain. If you've got jangled ' nerves
from a jangling alarm clock,
there's a radio-alarm clock that's
the answer to your prayers. Sim
Ply set the clock in your radio to
your favorit program, and you can
be awakened by the velvet notes
of soft music. Or, If you like, by
your early morning news pro
gram. To answer the ash-tray prob
lem, one radio now includes a
smoking stand. For small apart
ment dwellers there's a radio-bar
combination on the market. And
m Hollywood, where they don't
ro things by halves, they're fond
of a half pint-sized radio, no larger
than a cigarette case. It's built
(ike a hearing aid, and plugs right
in the ear so you can listen while
you work. Nobody else can hear.
Modern radios offer a lot of
surprises for those who want to
be different!
Colors to be Gayer
The trend toward bright colors
will be even more pronounced
during the coming season.
Bold use of color in all home
furnishings is apparently here to
stay, and suppliers, keenly aware
of trends in popular taste, are
making available furniture, rugs,
fabrics and accessories that make
it easy for,the average homemaker
to be her own decorator.

Headboard Beds
Growing Again
In Popularity
Dramatic displays of headboard
beds will be featured in retail bed
ding departments during the Fall
Home Fashions Festival. Shown
in a wide range of colors and de
signs, t h e variety of headboards
includes attractive styles for all
types of bedrooms.
Materials used in upholstering
the headboards range from deli
cate satin and taffeta to service
able leatherette and chintz. Flor
als, stripes and plaids as well as
plain colors of every hue in the
rainbow offer an interesting basis
for bedroom color schemes. Seme
headboards are shown with
matching draperies, bedspreads
and dressing table skirts.
The headboard upholstery
should set the decorative keynote
for the entire bedroom. For ex
ample, a delicately scrolled head
board done in velvet, taffeta or ni
lon, in a dainty shade of green,
pale blue or sunshine yellow
would very nicely set the stage for
a very feminine room.
Plans for a smartly s;ophistica
ted room might start with a cher
ry red faille headboard with an
edging of red and white stripes,
a bedspread to match, and red
and white striped draperies. For
masculine taste, a heavy, rectan
gular headboard covered in leath
erette, twill or corduoroy in bottle
green, dark red or a rich brown
would probably appeal.
The use of headboard beds
makes possible the a la carte se
lection of other furnishings, too.
For example, as many or as few
sectional storage pieces as are de
sired can be chosen to fit the room
and the needs of the occupant.
I Drawer chests, cabinets, book
cases, dressing taoies ana aesKs
may be chosen from any period
because the versatile headboard
bed harmonizes with all.
This bed style, once exclusively
decorator s item is now avail
able in almost all furniture and
specialty stores. It is particularly
popular with young and newly
married couples planning budget
apartments or small homes. They
can start with the mattress ,and
spring-on-legs, a chest and floor
covering, and add the headboard
and other pieces later.

Mahogany
Of the imported woods used,
mahogany is the best known.
Sir Walter Raleigh's crews, the
story goes, repaired the deck ol a
ship with light, reddish brown
wood secured on a West Indian
island. Upon their return, Queen
Elizabeth was so delighted with
the beauty of the material that
the. gallant Sir Walter ripped the
heavy planks from the decks, had
them made Into furniture, and
presented them to the sovereign.
'Modern' Tops
In Furnitures
Style Parade
If your home is furnished In
modern, you're at the peak of the
fashion, for that style is now firm
ly entrenched as America's num
ber one preference, a survey con
ducted by the National Retail Fur
niture Assn. discloses. Its popu
larity has skyrocketed to such
heights during the last year that
more modern is being purchased
for American homes than any
other single style, and shows no
signs of diminishing
Walnut appears to be the fa
vorite wood for the modernists,
and the trend to the new simpli
fied designs is particularly notice
able in dining room and bedroom
suites.
It should not be construed,
however, that modern la "run
ning away" with the American
home, although this new fledged
style accounts1 for 50 per cent
of all living room suits sold.
It is unlikely, according to style,
authorities, that modern will per
manently replace the traditional
period styles for all time. The
modern influence will creep into
even the traditional designs, but
these established periods are so
well founded through long use
and intrinsic esthetic value that
it is unlikely any new style will
drive them completely from even
the modern home.
As one designer puts It,
"Modern if disappearing as a
definite and sharply limited
but expanding simply as good
design with modern feeling.
There will definitely be more of
this as time goes on."
Hence, while the contemporary
influence is more manifest this
season than at any time in the
past, it is not the bizarre weird
moderne of several years ago, but
rather a much modified modern
more adaptable to the aver? re
home, and more in harmony with
the established periods. .
Nearly 75 per cent of the bed
room furniture sold in California
last year was modern in design,
while New England still clung to
the elegant, traditional 18th cen
tury bedroom suite. Thirty-five
percent of sale in New England
were traditional and only 26 per
cent modern.
Hahogany leads in the 8-peice
dining room suite category in all
parts of the country, but ties for
first place with walnut on the
West Coast. Although the nation1!
homemakers seem to prefer mod
ern furniture in the living room,
there is an overwhelming prefer
ence for 18th century dining room
suites.
