In 1876 a commission created . .. cslnnal act voted 8-to-7 to credit the contested electoral votes of Soutn uarouna, riuoua, r,,nn and Louisiana to Ruther ford B. Hayes, a Republican. He thus was seated over Samuel J. Tilden, a Democrat. In the first strictly House test Thomas Jefferson of Virginia was elected over Aaron Burr of New York. Both were Democrats ai3 in the popular election each won 73 electoral votes. It took the davs and 36 ballots aottla on Jefferson. Vermont and Maryland finally swung to him after being evenly divided and passing numerous times. Burr became vice-president. Didn't Get There In 1825 the man with the elec toral votes didn't become presi dent. Andrew Jackson of Tennessee got 99 electoral votes; John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts 84; William H. Crawford of Georgia 41, and Henry Clay of jority. Adams won with 13 votp In tv, House to seven for Jackson and four for Crawford. There were only 24 states then. Jackson ran again four years later and won. In 1832 he yv. elected. Johnson Elected The Senate elected Richard M. Johnson of Kentucky, Martin ya" Buren's running mate in 1837, the only time it ever was called upon to choose a vice-president. There were four vice-presidential and five presidential candi dates that year. Dlxiecrats claim their presi dential candidate, Gov. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, and his running mate, Gov. Fielding Wright of Mississippi, are cer tain to get the electoral votes of Alabama (11), Arkansas (9), Florida (8), Georgia (12), Louisi ana 10), Mississippi (9), South Carolina (8) and Texas (23). 'High Hopes' .They say they have "high hopes" of capturing Kentucky (11), Maryland (8), North Caro lina (14), Tennessee (12) and Vir ginia (11). If the 156 electoral votes of these 13 states had been taken away from the late President Roosevelt and his vice-presiden tial candidate, Harry S. Truman, in 1944 they still would have won with 276.
