Local Recruiters To Enlist WAVES Information concerning the en listment of Lane County women in the WAVES, regular U. S. Navy, was releaser Tuesday by CMM Charles Daws, recruiter In charge of the Eugene naval office. Women 21 to 30 years of age with high school educations and who are citizens of the United States are eligible. Enlistment terms are for three, four or six years. Applicants must be fully dis charged from all other branches of military service and any military commission must be completely terminated before enlistment will be accepted. All standards set for male naval personnel will be maintained for the WAVES, Chief Daws said. National enlistment: nnened Sept. 15 and the Eugene recruiting office will accept applications in the near future, according to Chief Daws. Crooks, Hood River, will speak at the an nual banquet Tuesday night. 'We Cover tfie Bread' HARRISON, N. J. (JP) Break fasts for ten cents and sandwiches for eight cents are being offered it a local restaurant. The proprietor explained to startled customers that the break fast consists of a roll and a cup of coffee. The sandwiches are two slices of bread with a choice of cheese, salami or bologna. The sandwich filling isn t thick, proprietor Jack Levine admitted, but "we cover the bread." The three drowned Sunday In the Sluslaw River when the car In which they were riding left the highway. Survivors of Jess Brent, who died in a Sunday fire, have re quested that his body be sent to Beaumont, Texas for services and Interment. Bartholomew - Buell Mortuary will have charge of local arrangement. Services for Donald Arp, 21, Cottage Grove, were scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at Mills Mortu ary in Cottage Grove. Arp died as the result of a Saturday night auto-motorcycle accident. Meanwhile, sheriff's deputies continued to drag the waters of Fern Ridge Lake for the body of Wilbur William (Bill) Marquardt, presumed drowned Sunday after noon when the motorboat in which he was riding alone overturned. According to a report filed by Division Superintendent L. Hop kins the month's high mark brings the total for the year to 67 with brakemen alone accounting for 32 of the accidents reported to the Interstate Commerce Commission. The rollup in the brakemen rate is caused by their tripping when they drop from moving trains to run up the track and throw switches. In August accidents reported were: conductors, 3; brakemen, 7; engineers, 2; firemen and hostlers, 3; and yardmen, 2. Comparative totals for the year are: conductors, 8; brakemen, 82; engineers, 6; firemen and hostlers, 9; and yardmen, 12.
