Willamalane Park Schedule Shows Busy Recreation Week SPRINGFIELD One of the busiest weeks of Willamalane's summer playground program is on the agenda for the next five days. Last week, 6647 children and adults took advantage of the re creational facilities. Touch football is on the sched ule, every Tuesday and Thursday night at Brattain Field across from the high school. Buses Leave Buses taking the boys and girls to Eugene for the swimming pro gram will leave the respective playgrounds at the following times during the week: Maple playground 9 a.m. for boys, and 1 p.m. for girls; Junior High, 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. for boys, 2:30 p.m. girls; Lincoln 10 a.m., boys, 2 p.m. girls; Glen wood 11 a.m. boys, 3 p.m. girls. Baseball School A baseball school is scheduled at the high school field every after noon, beginning at 2 pm. Monday evening at 7:30 on the high school field, a baseball game will be played against Colin Kelly of Eugene. Friday afternoon, all schools will take part in a rnytnm Dana jamboree at the Lincoln school. Softball Games Softball games are scheduled as follows: the junior high at Ma ple Monday afternoon; Lincoln at the junior high Tuesday, 2 p.m. and Maple at the junior high Wed nesday, 2 p.m. Other activities by playgrounds: Maple Tuesday: tap dance les sons, rhythm band, 3 to 4:30 Wednesday and Thursday: pony ring, crayon drawing for smaller children; Friday: sprinkler party, picnic at 12:30, and craft class from 1 to 4. Junior high Monday: craft class at 1 p.m., gym open from 6:30 to 9 p.m.; Tuesday, picnic at noon; Wednesday, girls tap class at 10, rhythm band: Thursday- sprinkler party for little kids in afternoon; Friday: pony rides, and Softball game. Miller Heads Church Music Byron Miller will head the music staff of First Methodist church for the coming year, it was announced Saturday by the church, Mrs. Barbara Tripp will be organ ist, and soloists will be Mrs. Doris Siegenthaler, soprano, James Kays, tenor, and Wayne Sherwood, barl. tone. The staff will, work with the complete church choir. Miller is director of instrumen tal music at Eugene High School, summer guest conductor of the Eugene Municipal Band, and a member of the Eugene Gleemen. He has had many years of chor al conducting in schools and choirs, and before coming to Eu gene conducted a church choir at Centralia, Wash. Mrs. Tripp was recently organ ist at the Christian Science Church, and the soloists, all known in Eugene, were reelected for an other year to their same positions, The choir of 35 was trained and conducted for several years by the late Glenn Griffith. Monday at the Old Community Hall in Veneta to discuss means of raising additional funds for construction of a new bymnaslum for the Veneta high school. The meeting is being spon sored by the Veneta Improvement Assn., of which Ralph Johnson is president. Previously $10,000 was raised for the gymnasium, but more funds are required now. City to Open Amazon Bids Bids on dredging operations to clear the Amazon Creek channel will be opened at the mayor's of fice in the city hall at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. City Manager Deane Seeger re ported Saturday that "every effort is being made" to see the drainage capacity of the stream increased before the rainy season sets in. If favorable bids are received Wednesday, Seeger added, Mayor Earl McNutt may call a special session of the city council to con sider them. The permanent improvement of the Amazon, a federal-aid project for which funds already have been appropriated, will not be jeopardized by the scheduled cleaning operation, Seeger said. But the threat of winter floods will be reduced until the perma nent control plan is carried out. New Drug Kills Garden Enemy Early successes have been an nounced by Asst. County Agent W. B. Parker in a campaign against the garden destroying syn- phyud through use of a new fumi gant solution called DD. Previous tests with tear gas, burning Chlorapicrin, live steam, electricity, and commercial solu tions were mostly ineffective and Parker warns that even "DD is In an early testing stage and may not be the final answer." Synphylids are white bugs, about a V incbj long, armed with two horns, a big appetite, and 24 legs. They eat almost all garden vegetables and cause thousands of dollars of damage yearly in Lane County. Almost every product and killer known has been used by experi mental teams from OSC and the agricultural agent's office but with little effect.
