W Army of ficials kept a tight veil of silence over preparations for a heavy rail shipment of Army equpment from Camp Phillips, reported destined for England. A source, considered reliable but who refused to be quoted, re- oorted that 240 flat cars were loaded with gun carriages, ve hicles, ambulances and command cars. The loading was under super vision of officers at Smokey Hill Army Air Field, A B-28 bomber base. In Washington, officials who could be reached, said they did not know what the reported ship ment might represent. Army offi cers commented that while there were normal shipments of re placement equipment for occupa tion forces in Europe the amount involved in this instance appeared too large for such consignments. Air Force spokesmen said the material was not Air Force equipment. No More Children In Radigan's Bar, NEWARK. N. J. m The "Children's Hour" has made its last stand at a Hoboken tavern. Throughout every one of the 22 cantons, and Swiss will observe their own version of July 4th. Church bells ring throughout the day, followed by open-air meetings, parades, local festivities and sports. Later, fires will burn on steep slopes, symbolic of Swit zerland's continuing devotion to democracy. The struggle for Swiss inde pendence against the Hapsburg barons reached its climax on Aug. 1, 1291, when representatives of three cantons met in a meadow along the shores of Lake Lucerne. Periodic struggles against would- be invaders had to be waged throughout the Middle Ages. Constitution Consolidation as a unified nation of 22 cantons was finally achieved through the Constitution of 1848, which remains today the basic law of Switzerland. The 100-year-old constitution was modeled to a considerable de gree after the constitution of the United States. The most important thing borrowed by the Swiss was the bicameral system. Principal difference between the two consti tutions is in the organization of the executive power. The Swiss President serves for only one year, and is elected from the seven-man Federal Council, comparable to the cabinet in the U. S. The right of presidential veto is replaced in Switzerland by the legislative referendum or popular veto. Security Through Army That Swiss freedom remains so solidly secure is attributed to a large degree to her citteen army. Universal military training en ables Switzerland to have the largest army in the world on a per capita basis. A force of 250,000 men can be mobilized overnight, 500,000 within 48 hours. Every able-bodied Swiss from 19 to 48 is subject to military service, and each soldier keeps his rifle and equipment with him at all times. During the last war, the Swiss built an amazing network of mod ern fortifications that honeycomb the Alps.
