Fage t, Regtuter-Gimrit, Eugene, Or., Thurs., July t, 1948 Top May Total Building permit! issued in the city of Eugene during June were almost $200,000 over the month of May, but they failed to top this year's record month of March Permits for new structures and repairs during June totaled $748, 955. In May, they totaled only $552,093, but the March permits totaled over a million dollars. The city building department last month issued a total of 145 permits, including 60 for new buildings and 85 for repairs to ex isting structures. Last month's permits more than doubled those of June, 1947, when the total was only $373,180. Broken down, the figures of the past month show the following permits and their total value: two duplexes at $20,000; 41 new resi dences at $335,600; nine garages at $4100; five commerlclal build ings at $121,000; two schools at $187,900; one apartment for $25, 000; -70 residential repairs at $36, 535; and 15 commercial repairs at $18,820. : Curtains cleaned In Santtone. . RIeetrie Cleaners. 1210 Willamette lit Fighting Mick Battles Cops CHICAGO (U.R) Dennis Ahem, 29, a fighting Irishman from county Mayo, was placed in a straight-jacket Thursday after fighting off five squads of police for almost a half hour. Ahem, an Irish Immigrant, stopped here Tuesday night en route to visit relatives at Merrill, Ore. Three negroes robbed and beat him. Police found him stag gering along a street, bleeding profuselv. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors said he had a frac tured skull. He was on the operat ing table when he came out from under the influence of the anes thetic and began swinging wildly at doctors, nurses and police. He knocked one policeman down and fled from the hospital. Five squads of patrolmen finally subdued him. Apparently deliri ous, he was taken to the county hospital for observation. Agricultural experts report that New York State dairy farmers saved nearly $500,000 in feed costs and received over $700,000 more In milk sales in one year through artificial insemination of 65,700 cows. Boeing Plant Seeks Employes for Seattle Boeing Airplane Co. In Seattle has immediate opening! for nearly 7000 skilled and semi-skilled air craft workers. Boeing is famous for its B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-29 Super fortresses of World War II. It has a backlog of more than $300,000, 000 in orders for military and commercial airplanes including the new B-50 Superfortress and airline Stratocruiser. The company said that althougr. the independent Aero Mechanics' Union is on strike at Boeing's Seattle plants, federal district court has found the strike unlaw ful and held that the union has lost its collective bargaining rights. Since the strike, more than 3100 new and former Boeing employees have been placed on the job. The company announced this week that it needs a permanent work force of 14,000 persons. Police Chief Keith Jones reveal ed the plan Wednesday during a speech at Lions Club luncheon. Local officers previously began their careers on the midnight and swing shifts, while those with seniority and experienced in po lice work took the more favor able day shift. Jones noted, however, that ma jor crimes generally occur be tween the hours of midnight and daylight, and that more experi enced men are needed to handle the cases. "The economic trend here is sound at the present time, and we have had little hard crime," he said, adding however that there had been five unsuccessful safe attempts during the past 60 days. The officers will rotate shifts every three months. Jones told Lions Club members that the police department is "working very hard" on training program and that it now is try ing to get a pistol and rifle range. One 36-hour course which every new officer must complete teaches finger-printing techniques, while another course teaches traffic in formation, investigation of break and enters, report writing and similar phases of police work. The local police force totals 29 men. "The day of the Dig aumo cop is passed; we must be pro fessionally trained men," said Jones in telling of the training programs. Aroline F. Davis Aroline Flavilla Davis, 94, died June 2K in Drain at the home of her daughter, Mrs Maud Cowles. She was born in Brownsville, Me., S"pt. 4, 1853, and lived in the Drain area the past 42 years. She was a member of the G.A.R. auxiliary. Her husband, Luther G. Davis, died several years ago. Surviving are four cnimren, Mrs. Cowles; Mrs. Milard Ryan, Eugene; DeWitt Davis, Drain; and T. E. Davis, Scottsburg. Services were scheduled for Drain Methodist Church, with Rev. Charles A. Edwards officiat ing. Interment will be in City of Drain Cemetery. Bonus Plan On Ballot PORTLAND.
