IAL Get Stale Highway Approval Reckless Driving Charge Brings Fine A six-man municipal court jury . found Dean Capps, 648 Fourth Ave. W guilty of reckless driving in a tr.ai held Tuesday night In the city council chambers. Capps was arrested June 14 and charged with operating a motor cycle in reckless fashion. The Jury ordered that he be fined $25 and recommended that his driver's license be suspended for six months. Oregon State College dean of women since 1941, will officially resign Thursday because she is a professor's wife. Under regulations permitting only one member of the same family to hold a staff position, the dean of women became in eligible upon her marriage to Dr. Charles E. Mockmore, head of the college civil engineering depart ment, two years ago. Wartime re laxation of rules permitted her to remain temporarily. Army Engi neers. $700,000 Surfaclnf A third action taken by the commission Tuesday allocated $700,000 of atatt highway funds to be used in improving the sur facing on the Willamette High way between the Cascades sum mit and the juncture of this route with the Dalles-California High way. The commission allocated this fund with a statement that the route has grown In importance with expansion of the upper Willamette Valley and south-central Oregon areas. Baldock reported from Salem that the commission hopes to improve 15-mlle section going east from the tunnel, a few ml lea west of the summit. The aim, he said, is to put crushed rock on the road this summer to prevent further deterioration in the next spring thaw. Hard surfacing will then be added next summer. The state highway engineer re ported that while federal funds have been allocated for work on this highway, the commission feels that the need is' too great to per mit waiting until those funds actually are available. First Time J. E. Turnbull, chairman of the Eugene Chamber of Commerce highways committee, stated Wed nesday that much of the Willam ette route has never been given Final surfacing and expressed his group's commendation of the state commission's decision. Turnbull expressed further satisfaction with the action of the millrace highway relocation plan, an achievement which Chamber President John R. Snellstrom then credited to Turnbull and his com mittee. "This important .link in the re location of Highway 99 through Eugene comes as a part of the total improvement for which the Chamber's highway committee has labored many years," Snellstrom said. Local Robber Suspect Apparently Leaves Town Eugene police broadcast a "wanted" message to other Oregon cities and the state police Wed nesday dfler finding that a suspect In a local robbery had cleaned out his apartment and apparently de parted from the city. The police began looking for the man, formerly employed as a dish washer in a downtown care, after the proprietor of the establishment reported the theft of two money bags, tach containing about $z0. The money bags were found empty in a ventilating well at the apartment house where the sus pect had lived. But the man, him self, had packed his bags and was reported last seen at the Grey hound bus depot purchasing a ticket. Camp opened officially Sunday and will run Budget Okayed Without Dispute (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1) will require $115,938 to be raised by tax because of a carry-over last year of $25,000. The retirement fund will require $35,183. Other funds, such as the $6000, law library fund and the $52,840 fair budget, are listed as "self supporting," and will re quire no tax. The $5600 "sheep killing dog fund" is included in the category of county business supported en tirely by its own fees. Road Budget The road budget lost another $25,000 of O & C land money in a transfer needed to pay warrants when the county overspent last years budget but the total road fund will still remain well above a million dollars. There remained after final re vision, $936,749.45 in the road budget, none of which was to be raised by direct county tax. Added to this will be an anticipated $187,500 from the 2.5 mill levy voted by the people on May 21. Wages Stand At Wednesday's hearing, there was no mention of wages for coun ty employes, although there had been earlier signs of unrest in the courthouse when the budget was published. Under the adopted budget, nearly all employes got at least $15 a month pay increase. Reservations Reservations are being received for troops at the council office and room will be made for these units at camp for the period they most desire to go. Heavy registration is already in for periods up through Aug. 8. A check of troops interests shows swimming and boating at the top of the list, with sched uled hikes to Carpenter Mountain and the Middle Sister rating high. Scouting skills will be taught through use of the ax yard, na ture trail and camping and pio neering projects. Camp Staff The camp staff includes Harold Shearer, director; Don Reeve, program director and assistant camp director; Ted Baker, com missary oincer; jd Mune, pro gram assistant; Herb Baker, pro visional leadership; Nick Nicker son, waterfront; Mrs. Mary Scharf, camp cook; and several senior Scouts as junior assistant camp leaders. The senior staff members are all former Scouts, most of whom have attained Eagle rank.
