Y., ash barrel, and it wasn't until passers-by heard his whimpers that the police were sum moned to rescue him. Mystery Deaths Investigated ANCHORAGE, Alaska, (F) Discovery of the unmarked bodies of two Alaska men, apparently killed together in a home , in the isolated Bristol Bay settlement of Dillingham, confronted authorities Thursday with what appeared to be a clueless mystery. The victims were Harold W. (Tubby) Griffin, 45, former pro fessional football player and busi nessman, and Martin Ernestui, 42, fisherman and cannery worker. . Mrs. Griffin, found In the Ern estus home with the two dead men, was reported in a critical condition at Kanakanak. A visitor from Dillingham reported she has a fractured wrist and possible skull fracture. Bodies of the two men were flown here by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents. Neither men had been knifed or shot, the FBI said, and a four hour autopsy failed to disclose the cause of death. Their organs will be sent to the FBI laboratory In Washington, D. C. ( Griffin, well known In the Seat tle area, was a football center at the university of Iowa in the mid 1920's and on graduation organiz ed and played on the Portsmouth, Ohio, Lions, one of the early pro football teams. He later came west and was graduated from the Uni versity of Washington law school. Subsequently he went north to the Bristol Bay area to manage the Lowe Trading Co. post owned by his sister, Mrs. Marguerite Brad ford, Bellevue. Wash. He also managed the Bristol Bay Cham, ber of Commerce. Halsey Personals HALSEY Mr. and Mrs. Jack Barham have, named their son. John Michael. He was born In a Eugene hospital Deo. 30. He is telr third child and second son. Grandparents are Mrs. Beth Abel of Albany and Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Barham of Yrekai Calif. The Barhams are living at the J. B. Waggener home. Mrs. Barham and Mrs. WaeKener are sisters. Mrs. Lee Foster has returned home from Portland where she has been caring for her mother, Mrs. Dora Cogswell wno is in. She reports her mother as im proving and able to be up part of the time. Mrs. Foster also reports the birth of-a daughter, Carol Jean, to her brother and aister-in law, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Cogs well. They have two sons, six and eleven years old. Phil lived In this community when a boy. Mrs. Charity Clark is in Har- risburg caring for her grand children while her daughter, Mrs. Darrel Huston, is substituting in the school. The purpose of the lone-ranee project is to improve Oregon's fruit and nut crop, valued at more than $90,000,000 in 1946, by introducing, breeding and testing promising new varieties here from other states and countries. Dr. Quentln B. Zielinski, associate horticulture 1st, is project leader. "New and improved varieties are necessary to meet the ever-present competition froirij other areas, to cope with changing consumer de mand, and to Insure Oregon's place among the leaders in fruit and nut production," Dr. Zielinski said in outlining project plans. Under the improvement pro gram, selections from other states will be gathered and studied at the college. Varieties that prove adapt ed to certain horticultural areas of the state will then be sent to branch experiment stations and ex perimental areas for actual field testing. ! After foundation stocks have been established, breeding experi ments will be initiated in an at tempt to develop varieties that are especially suited to growing con ditions in various parts of the state.
