gntene Retister-Onirfl 'Bombsighl' Thieves Warned Chltf of Pollct Keith Jones Tuesday Issued i final warning to Juveniles Indulging In the current fad of stealing "bombsighl" radia tor ornaments from Buick cars and solicited the cooperation of the citisena of Eugene In halting the thefts. Chief Jones said that under state law tampering with an automo bile can be prosecuted as a felony. No Sympathy youngsters who steal the radia tor gadgets to make bracelets of them have been repeatedly warn ed through the press and radio, Jones said, and little clemency will be shown if they are apprehended. Three cases of "bombsigiit" thefts were reported Monday night, the chief said in asking that any one noticing youngsters in posses sion of the ornaments make an immediate report to police head quarters. Buick owners who reported the losses were: Glenn C. Linebaugh, 110 Bauer Lane; Nels Johnson, 240 30th Ave. E.; and Mrs. W. R. Far rish, 1277 Willamette. Women Jailed In Police Raid Three woman were arrested for; prostitution and a fourth for operating a bawdy house by city policemen in two raids Sunday. All forfeited bail Monday. Arrested at 2:05 a. m. at 887 Willamette St. were June Allen, 28, and Mildred Tucker (or Tay lor), SO. Florence Bowers (Alias Lois Shaw) 30, and Mary Ann Davis, 38, were arrested at 8:30 p. m. at 731 Willamette St. Mildred Tucker posted $200 bail for operating a bavdy house, and the other women $100 bail for prostitution. Negroes Declare Vote Intentions NEW YORK UP) Fifty thou sand Negroes in the Richmond, Va., area are "going to vote in spite of the poll tax," the annual meeting of the board of directors of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was told Monday. Dr. J. M. Tinsley, board member from Richmond, reported that the 90,000 have been added to the voting rolls in recent months. Yale Man Pleads Guilty to Extortion VALE, Ore. U.B Travis L. Fisher, 35, was under suspended sentence Tuesday after pleading guilty to an attempt to extort $5000 by threatening to spread polio germs. Fisher, father of two young in fantile paralysis victims, was ar rested last week by FBI agents and Sheriff C. W. Glenn. He was charged with demanding $5000 from Sylvan Williamson, Vale farmer, in a letter on the threat of spreading polio germs to the Williamson children. Judge M. A. Biggs sentenced Fisher to two years in prison, the maximum under Oregon law, but suspended the jail term after Wil liamson asked the court to show clemency to Fisher. Forum to Hear Earl Newbry Earl T. Newbry, secretary of state, will be the featured speak er Friday noon at the Chamber of Commerce's "First Forum of '48," Orlando John Hollis, forum com mittee chairman, announced Tues day. Members of the city's various service clubs and all Interested citizens are invited to hear Sec retary Newbry at the forum luncheon in the Eugene Hotel, Hollis said. For his first official appear ance in Eugene since assuming the secretary of state's duties, Newbry has chosen as his topic, "Oregon Faces a New Year What Are the Odds?" His talk will be directed at analyzing the state's problems as he views them from his official position as a member of the state board of control. The chamber forum programs were adjourned during the Christmas and New Year's holi day weeks, but are being resumed with a number of outstanding speakers scheduled to speak dur ing the remaining portion of the annual series, Hollis announced. Committee Drops Eggless Thursday WASHINGTON UP) Pro posals to set up meat rationing machinery on a stand - by basis won the endorsement Tuesday of Senators Ives (R-NY) and Mur ray (D-Mont.) while the meat issue simmered. President Truman's cabinet food committee decided to eliminate eggless Thursdays after this week but to continue its appeal for meatless Tuesdays. James A. Stillwell, food con servation director, announced that this step Is being taken because of a seasonal Increase in the sup ply of eggs. Monsanto Cave-In Under Investigation DAYTON, O UP) Atomic Energy Comm. officials Tuesday launched an Investigation into the cave-in of an underground con crete passage being built at the Monsanto atomic research plant at nearby Miamisburg. Eight workmen were injured, one critically, Monday night when 30 to 60 tons of concrete, newly- laid over the passage, cascaded into the 30-foot long tunnel, Ken neth Dunbar, area manager for the Atomic Energy Comm., re ported. Three workmen were inside the underground chamber when part of the cement let go. Several com panions rushed to their aid, but five of them were trapped in a second slide. Oregon Farm Prices Increase in December PORTLAND W) Oregon farm commodities advanced in price in virtually all Items during Decem ber, some to new records, the Fed eral Agriculture Department said Tuesday. Grain, at a peak of $2.72 a bushel average and above the $2.17 parity, joined meat animals In new highs. Hogs brought $26.50 quota tions compared with $17.80 parity price level. Beef cattle $20.10 compared with $13.30 parity. Apples and pears were the only mapor items plummeting in prices, dropping to the lowest mid-December level in five years. Nerveless Thieves Take Plow, Tractors ELLENSBURG, Wash. OP) Nerveless thieves who backed a truck within 50 yards of a farm house, stole two tractors and a plow, and then hired a wrecker to pull them out of the mud when they mired down during the get' away, were being sought by the sheriff s office Tuesday. Deputy Sheriff Louis Voshall said the men backed the truck to a bank 50 yards from the Ray Sabin farm, loaded on a tractor and plow and drove off. Mired down nearby, they returned for a second tractor to pull them out. Unsuccessful in this, Voshall said they hailed a passing motorist and were driven to a service sta tion where they hired a wrecker. The wrecker driver, Nat Sawyer, told Voshall the men paid him in cash and drove away when he freed the truck. Paratrooper's Body Flown to Fairbanks FAIRBANKS, Alaska M The body of one of three paratroopers who jumped to the aid of six B-29 crash survivors on the Icy Seward Peninsula Dec. 27 was being brought here by plane Tuesday for memorial services in the Ladd Field chapel. The victim. First Sgt. Santhell London of Kinta, Okla., was found Sunday frozen to death near the wreckage of the big bomber. Still missing are the other para troopers and a Ladd Field doctor who made the midnight jump in 30-below zero weather, and the B-29's pilot and navigator, Lts. Vern H. Arnett and Frederick Sheetz. All are feared dead, but an intensive search by plane and dog teams Is being continued. Sanitary District Needs New Petitions New petitions will be circulated In the area of the south Willam ette Sanitary district and in the College Crest Water District pro posed new addition to the area of the district, Donald Husband, at torney for the district, said Tues day. The County court set the old boundaries of the district last fall, but planners for the area decided, In the meantime, that the addi tional area would be helped and could share the cost of the district, he said. The change meant that the whole process would have to be redone, through the county court. Adrian W. Vaaler, engineer for the district, Is preparing a new map and description for the whole area. Rent Office Reports 150 Sign Leases About 150 Lane County land lords and tenants signed leases granting a 15 per cent Increase in controlled units before the Dec. 31 deadline, the rent control of fice reported Tuesday. The signed leases, which are to be In effect until Dec. 31, 1948, are to be In the rent office at 507 Wil lamette within 15 days after sign ing. In Lane County, with approxi mately 7000 units under control, the percentage of leases was slight ly under the national average of six per cent, the rent control of fice reported. (U.PJ The inlercoastal tank ship Catawba Ford rammed and sank a heavily laden tank barge in the Columbia River Tuesday and the 10,000-ton Purdue Victory was damaged la ter when It struck tthe submerged barge in a rainstorm. The collision opened a lagged hole in the hull of the 10.317-ton Catawba Ford, and the Purdue Victory sustained ex tensive damage.
