1947 Divorces to-Decline DOTTSS " since before the war the nat!on' divorce rate dropped sharply in 1947. In 1946, more Americans than ever before flocked to the div orce courts to iron out their postwar matrimonial problems. But last year the trend reversed down to peacetime living. Other factors they cited were; 1. Women had lost some of their independence and no longer were able to shed their husbands and get high paying jobs. 2. Soaring prices had cancelled out the "easy money" of the im mediate postwar period, and fewer could afford divorce. 3. The higher birth rate tended to keep marriages intact. Tax Collection Total Set at Near $3 Million Lane County, collected $2,925, 163 in taxes during 1947. Alex McKinzey, county tax collector reported. This compared with a $2,876, 877.51 collection at the end of 1946. Collections this year were $48,285.49 greater than last year. Total collections this year were 81 per cent of the total real property tax bill, McKinzey said. Douglas County 4-H Club Wins Douglas County has been select ed by the State Extension office as carrying out the most outstand ing 4-H safety program of 1947 in Oregon. As a result, the county extension office at Roseburg will receive a General Motors plaque of merit. Kenneth C. Minnick, extension agent in Douglas county, reported that safety activities included in the county program were putting guards on all moving machinery parts, fire-fighting equipment on field machines and farm and home safety steps. Common hazards such as bare light wires, unlighted and broken stairways, improper hand ing of gasoline, and cleaning fluids and fuel oils were corrected. During the year the 4-H'ers put out flares at a broken bridge so cars would not drive upon it, placed warning signs where power poles were down endangering traf fic on roadways, and repaired a number of hay mows where water was leaking through on chopped hay which might cause spontan eous fire. Instructions were also distribute ed and demonstrations made on how properly to handle cleaning fluids for dry cleaning and how to operate safely oil stoves and handle fuel oil. Organizations cooperating in the program included the County Fire Protective Assn. and the Lions Club. County Clerk Has Busy Record Year The Lane County clerk's office recorded 254 estate probates and 85 guardianship proceedings dur ing 1947, The totals compared with 239 estates and 93 guardianships for 1946. The clerk's office sold 1166 marriage- licenses during 1947. During 1947 canine population, along with human, showed an in crease. This year 5800 dog licenses were sold to people who live out side of cities. In 1946 5300 licen ses were sold. She was born in Jasper, and lived there until her marriage to Cleve Sears. She was a descendent of two pioneer families, the Wallaces and the Drury's. Surviving besides her widower are two sons, Edwin and Bill; two sisters, Caroline Awbrey, Jasper, and Nora Rob, Redmond; three brothers, Bob and Charles Wallace of Bend and Fred Wallace, Spr ingfield, and a number of nieces and nephews, Services were held Tuesday in Tillamook.
