Added to the district's facilities, not counting the new Kelly Junior High School, were: 1. New classrooms at River Road, Bailey Hill, Dunn and Edi son Schools, and the utilization of space in other schools for class rooms; 2. The new frequency modula tion radio station at Eugene Voca tional School; S. A new heating plant at Eu gene High School, now slated for completion in about two weeks; (. A driver training course for both high school students ancL, auuiis, 7. Construction of an agricul tural shop at Eugene High School, and more space for adult students at the vocational school, all made possible through the purchase of surplus buildings from Camp Adair; 8. The Colin Kelly Junior High School will be completely paid for out of this year's budget money. Eugene School District started the year by moving scores of stu dents Into the new junior high school on Jan. 27. Although the work was not completed, the stu dents moved In and the school was formally dedicated several months later. Fay Increase Early In the winter, the teachers asked for and received average pay boosts of $700 per year, to help them survive higher prices. On April 24 the voters approved the levy of approximately $454,000 outside the 6 per cent limitation to help carry the schools through another year. The vote was 593 to 336, and It Increased the levy from 43.9 to 52.18 mills. Budget Total The total budget approved last July for the fiscal 1947- was $1,462,128.28. A special five-year levy to raise $500,000 for construction of a new senior high school on Nineteenth Ave. ends this fiscal year. Facts entering into the building of a high school now are high costs and the question of whether the Amazon Creek will be controlled. No move has yet been made to continue the levy for a longer per iod, although it Is known that a school cannot be built with only half a million dollars. Enrollment Increased enrollment, the big gest problem, has not been licked. Said Supt, Clarence Hlnes in a recent report: "It is evident that the phenomenon of school growth will be with us well into the 1950's, at least." In November,1946, Eugene's elementary grade students totaled 2807; in November, 1947, they tot aled 3038, 7.1 per cent gain. School officials are planning on about 3250 elementary students next year, or another 7 per cent gain. Reasons for the Increases, which are biggest in the grade schools, City News Robert G. Fowler, Jr., son of the former county agent of Jack son county, has been appointed extension specialist in informa tion methods at Oregon S'late College.
