SPRINOnELD Ray. X. I.
Bartlam, Eugene, speaking to the
Rotary Club here Friday on the
"Meaning of Christmas," told
what he thought would be a solu
tion to gain permanent world
peace.
He said "men must change If
wc are to gain peace inrougn
men's schemes" and for men to
change they must turn to Christ
"who is the only one still able to
change men."
Turn to Christ
People, said Rev. Bartlam, for
mer president of Eugene Rotar
lans, ai self-centered, but if they
turn to Christ they "gradually be
come outward in their thinking."
He told the Rotarlans that if
'you change" (in this manner)
"; our home will change, your
children will change and some
day the world will change." He
said it Is the men behind the
schemes for peace that are the
only ones who can make the
schemes work. He warned mat
thoie men mu: ' be changed.
Tells History
Rev. Bartlam gave a brief
sketch of the de-elopments in his
tory that led to the celebration of
Christmas on Dec. 25, poinung out
that the Christian faith in the
western world had celebrated
Christmas on that date since about
340 A.D.
Gregory the Great, a bishop In
llnse the beginning of the
Christian era it Is estimated a-
bout 40 billion persons have lived
In the world.
Rome, had Instructed his mis-Ion
arles to change the designs behind I
the meaning of the celebrations of
the primitive peoples (they wor
shipped the sun gods at this time
of the year when the sun changed
from its r ion course to its low
course) to one of Christian spirit
ual meaning.
