Danger to Grow Fire Chief Ed Surfus empha sized Wednesday that the coming of colder weather in the next few months will increase the danger of fire as heating units come back into use. He pointed out that householders often let the base ment become cluttered during the summer and then build a fire in the furnace without cleaning up the accumulated waste paper and refuse. He cited figures showing that fires take 150 per cent more lives during the months from August to January than during the rest of the year. The chief recommended: Clean soot from flues and chim neys: repair rusted or damaged equipment; check chimneys for cracks in brick or mortar. Inspect and refill fire extin guishers. Keep 18 inches between stoves and walls. Place hot ashes in metal containers. Screen the fireplace. Keep portable heaters away from curtains, and keep a fire extinguisher near fuel supplies. . Getting Heavy Eugenes globe-trotting corres pondent, Dick Johnston, who re turned from China and a job with Time magazine in February to ac cept a position aa assistant foreign editor of Life Magazine in New York, returned to Eugene this week lamenting that "I haven't anything to talk about except how fat I am." The former Register-Ouard re porter, who has added at least SO much-needed pounds since his last visit home, waa called home from China early this year by the illness of his mother, Mrs. Sarah John ston, Eugene, whom he is now visiting. After the February trip to Eu gene, he visited Time-Life head quarters In New York and decided on the stateside job. Johnston's wife, Laurie, who has done responsible work with press services abroad, is handling re search on the Far East and doing some writing for Newsweek Maga zine, competitor of Time and Life. She and her husband bothi worked on the old Daily News In Eugene, where they met. Since their marriage they have both traveled widely, returning to Eu gene and Albany to visit their parents at intervals. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston will re turn to New York after visiting a few more days in Oregon.
