The annual tourney will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday with the 1948 defending champion and runnerup in the field, Virgil Jones and Don Siegel, respectively. A handsome trophy, donated, by Skeie's Jewelers, will go to the winner along with a sizeable cash purse. Speedway, lo cated midway between Eugene and Corvallis, will open Sunday when more than 20 of the best cycle jockeys in the Pacific Northwest vie in ' the first of a aeries of meets sponsored by the Eugene Motorcycle Club. The Sunday afternoon program will include a series ot heat races in which the riders wilj qualify for either the "A or "B class main event, depending on their times. The quarter-mile' oval, with seating accommodations for 1800 spectators Is considered the fsst est motorcycle track in the Pa cific Northwest and will provide an opportunity for the faster ma chines to attain a maximum speed. The turns have been build wide enough to allow1 lightning man euver? at all times. ' Hay Hyland, riding his British Norton Marx racer, and Casey Jones and Save Walling, driving American-made .cycles, are ex-. pected to lead the local contingent. One of the top out-of-town driv ers will be Ernie Kolbrook of Medford, former 80 and 200-mUe National champion. Another will be nea twee oi peruana, wno jtn ished fifth in the Saytona, fla., claesic earlier in the year, and fled Farwell of Seattle, who finished seventh in Florida. One of the interesting parts of the meet will be the contest be tween Hyland's machine and Rice's Royal Enfield. Both are capable of hitting wel) ever 100 mph. Other outstanding riders entered are Ted Nichols and Jock Colley of the Seattle Motorcycle Con ference..
