Bed Rice of Portland and Red Farwell of Seattle, who recently placed llltn and seventh, respec tively, in the National champion ships at Daytona Beach, Fla., will be among the entries. Another will be Ernie Holbrook of Med- ford's Rogue River Ramblers. The 36-year-old veteran won the 50 mile National title at San Pedro in 1939 and the 200-mile Na tional at Oakland in 1941. The new Benton-Lane "speed way" Is constructed of oiled beach sand, brought to the track in 30 truck loads from the Oregon coast. The track is 20 feet wide at the narrowest place and the slightly banked turns are 200 feet wide, permitting the riders to maintain a speed of at least io mph at all times. . Amateur mittmen from Vancouver Recreation and the Chemawa Indian School will furnish the competition for the JCC sluggers. Dick Weldon, finalist In the re cent Oregon AAU championships, will hold down the feature sdoL but Chairman Harold Wyatt has been unable to match the JCC welterweight to date. Kenneth Sam, 147-pound Indian. Is ex pected to be signed for the match. Two other local mittmen who showed well in the state tourney will vie Verle Baarstad, 135 pounder, and Jim McDonald, 147 pounder. Baarstad will meet Bill McCarley of Vancouver, and Mc Donald will take on Don Cassidy worn the Washington club. The JCC mittmen have sched uled two exhibitions at local clubs, at the Elks Wednesday night and at the Eagles April 22. WE REPAIR RODS AND REELS For 10th Meet The 10th Hayward Relays, Ore' Son's replica of the Penn Relays, will be staged on the University ot Oregon s Hayward Field Fri day and Saturday. Although there were only 12 schools that had registered in the A division, six in the "B and three In the "C" as late as Friday, the complete entry list is expected to duplicate tne record-breaking 1948 field of nearly 60 schools and 700 athletes. Entered in the "A" division (enrollment from 500 up) were commerce, oenson and lirant oi Portland, Milwaukie, Hillsboro, Grants Pass, Eugene, Bend, Klam ath Falls, Lebanon, Albany and Medford's defending champions. The "B" entries, for schools with enrollment between 150 and 500, include Forest Grove. Red mond, Newport, University (Eu gene), Sluslaw of Florence and Cottage Grove. Beaverton's de fending champions had not en tered. The "C" list, for schools with . 150 enrollment or less, in cludes Lowell, Oakridge and Sheridan's defending champions. The list of events, changed from year to year to conform with the wishes of coaches, finds only one new event this year the dis tance medley in the "C" class. There has been a change in the point scoring. Individual events will be on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis and all relay events will count 10-8- 6-4-2-1. Colonel Bill Hayward. Oregon tracic coacti lor the past 44 years, inaugurated tne relays Back in 1937 and the event has been held every year but one when OSC was scheduled to handle the meet on an alternating basis and failed to conduct the relays. Hayward will direct the relays, assisted by John A. Warren. The "A" division events will be held Friday, starting at 1:30 p.m. That evening the coaches will be entertained at a social event sponsored by the University of Oregon. District, Big-Six League Tilts Top Baseball Slate The Hayward Relays will take the high school sports spotlight this week but the baseballers have slated a full week of action with five games slated. Tuesday afternoon the Spring field Millers will go to Elmira and St. Mary's will travel to Junction City. Friday afternoon Big-Six League play will open as the Eu gene High Axemen entertain Cor vallis at Civic Stadium and Spring field goes to Albany. Junction City will entertain Lebanon in a non-league game. The Cottage Grove track team, with two impressive victtories un der its belt, will warm up for the weekend relay meet with a dual meet Monday afternoon against Roseburg on the Grove track. Tuesday afternoon the Springfield High junior varsity track squad will entertain several Lane County j "B" League teams at Springfield, j Baseball games this year at El mira are set for 1:30 p.m. while j all others, except the night tilts, are scheduled for 3 p.m. ' The Tuesday afternoon tilt be-! tween Elmira and Sringtield will be the first action for the Millers. Coach John Young's Miller outfit will be favored over the Falcons who took a 7-3 trimming from Junction City last week. The Junction City-St. Mary's tilt will probably find the Tigers in the favored role. Hood Meet Eugene High School will enter a six-man ski team in the Dart mouth Trophy Races to be held at Timberlme April 19 at 10 a.m. Tryouts for team positions were being held Sunday at Hoodoo Bowl. Times of best four men of each team in each event will be used to select the trophy winner at the Mt. Hood event. Any high school student under 20 may compete for a team position. Blaine McGillicuddy, Bruce Chase, Ward Haynes and Bill Mc cracken, all Eugene High School' students, are planning to enter the Giant Slalom at Timberline April 26. Chase placed second in the boy's division of the "Safe-Ski-Slalom" at Mt. Hood last weekend. Siuslaw Downs Sailors 68-22 in Dual Meet FLORENCE, April 12 The Siu slaw Vikings defeated Mapleton 66-22 in a dual track meet held here last week. The Vikings, in winning their easy decision, swept every first except the shot put. Larry Robinson gathered high- point honors for the meet, col lecting 19 points, by taking the high sticks, high jump and broad jump, and tieing for first in the pole valut.
