Erosion Control
Program Grows
More than 5000 dams and ponds
for erosion control and livestock
water have been constructed on
Oregon farms and ranches in the
past 10 years with AAA practice
program assistance, E. H. Miller,
chairman of the State Committee
said Wednesday. ,
But in announcing this record
of accomplishment, Miller points
out that a recent conservation
needs survey shows that at least
that many dams are needed to pre
vent erosion by heavy spring run
offs and provide dry-season water
for livestock.
Burns Example
A pond just completed by Aivm
Hulbert, Burns rancher, under the
1947 agricultural conservation pro
gram is cited by Miller as an ex
ample of the worK Being opne wiin
AAA assistance.
Hulbert used a . bulldozer . to
gouge a 70-Dy-iou loot pre in a
natural drainage area, ine pona
will store about 160,000 gallons of
seeDase water from melting snows
for use during the dry season.
Need Approval
The project had prior approval
from the Harney County AAA
committee for a practice payment
that will carry half of the total
cost.
Farmers and ranchers who want
practice program help in carrying
out this or any other of the 43 ap
proved practices for this year will
need to file a farm plan with their
county AAA committee before
May 1, Miller added. Me also point
ed out that the committee approval
is needed before the work is start
ed.
Hood June 15.
Also expected to attract record
crowds are the Pendleton Round
Up, Astoria's Salmon Derby, Sea
side's first annual Miss Oregon
pageant, Salem's revived Cherrv
Festival, Newport's Crab Festival,!
