Leads Scoring s The defending state champion ' Eugene High Axemen survived the first round of the state tourna ment Wednesday night by scoring I 44-36 victory over Coach Son r Mabee's La Grande Tigers. Left-handed Ernie Wilde was f the big factor in the Axeman vic itory. He led the attack for Eu- ' gene with 12 points and played his J always excellent floor game. Fred I Jarrard of La Grande was high i for the game, however, with 13 points. Meet K-rUs ! The Axemen now go into the ! quarter-final round against the i powerful Klamath Falls Pelicans, The clash will be' the finale of Thursday night's quarter-final ao ition. La Grande's star guard, Bobby j Green, sprained his ankle in a I workout earlier in the week but he was one of the best guards in the J tournament. The final game of the first round of the state tournament Wednes day night at McArthur Court be tween the Klamath Falls Pelicans and the Lebanon Warriors was by far the most spectacular in first round action. The heavily favored Pelicans were barely able to squeeze by with a 63-57 victory. The underdog Leoanon outui, with three sophomores in the starting lineup, stayed right with the Pelicans all the way. Tne score with four minutes remaining fa vored Klamath Falls, 51-48. Ray Craig made it 53-48. But then the Warriors came on with a rush and pulled up to 52-53 as Elmer Fields and Paul Alley scored long field goals. Craig scored again for Klamath but Alley retaliated immediately for Lebanon to make the score 55 Klamath, 54 Lebanon. Gene Hoover scored two freethrows for the Pelicans on Dick Grays foul but with two minutes to go Alley again scored a long one-hander to make it 57-56. At that point Coach Wayne Scotf s Pelicans put the game away as the plucky Warriors couldn't stop Hoover, Bob Redkey and Craig from scoring in succession to put the Pelicans seven points out in front. Jack Evans, as good s guard as anyone showed in the first round and a sophomore at that, scored one more freethrow for Coach Page's outfit before the game ended. - Paul Alley was high for the game with 19 points. Gene Hoover got 18 for Klamath. KLAMATH FALLS (SS) TO Eugene game, and who it will be is anybody's guess, Trouble Expected The Eugeneans had trouble on the backboards against the La Grande club and it appears they will have even more trouble from the lanky Klamath crew. Another new tournament attendance rec ord is expected Thursday night to see the doubleheader with Salem against Newberg and Eugene against Klamath Falls. Salem displayed speed, size and drive in its opening-round victory over the tough Roosevelt outfit. The Big Six League champions have plenty of big rugged boys around the backnoaras ana a couple of capable guards in Roger Dasch and Dick Hendrie, Eusena will be the underdog Thursday night against the Klanv ath outfit but if the Axemen start to roll they may give the Fencans the final nudge out of champion ship consideration that Klamath Falls almost got from the War riors Wednesday night. Peterson droDDed in 13 out of 15 freethrow attempts and canned 12 field goals. He onlv made twri points in the first quarter but warmed up in the second quarter to score 15. The runner-up team from Port land looked like they might make a battle of it and the game was the most bitterly contested of any of the first round games. Roose vMt hattled furiously aeainst the rugged Vikings and tempers flared several times. The game cooled off later, however, when the Vik ings went so far out in front that there was no hope left for the Teddies. Salem led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter and 33-21 at the half. The Vikings atretched it to 47-28 at the three-quarter mark. Coach Rollie Rourke's Roosevelt crew, despite some good work by Jack son Winters, could not keep the Vikings in check and they were going away when the game enaea, Bie Bill Hill led the Salem at tack with 16 points. Roger Dasch got 11 and Dick Hendrie got 11 for the Vikings. The Colunv bians will meet Redmond at 9 a.m. Friday. The defeat elimi nated the Indians from the tourna ment. The first half was a close affair with the lead changing hands sev eral times. Molal'.a was ahead 22-20 as the half ended. Rainier took charge in the third quarter and built up a 38-28 lead by the end of the period. Molalla almost got a rally started m the fourth period but the Rainier lead was too big. Bob Ball of Rainier led the scoring with 15 points. It was the final game of tne Wednesday afternoon session, It looked like it would be Hills boro in the first quarter as the Spartans moved out to a 11-9 lead alter overtaking an early New berg lead. The Tigers came back and tied the count at 12-all in the second quarter and took a 20-12 lead at the end of the half. EUSENE Phono S840 Marshfield Takes Win From Molalla Coach Bill Borcher's Marshfield Pirates ran into stubborn opposi tion from Don Wilson's Molalla Indians but the Pirates pulled away steadily all during the game to rack up a 52-33 vctory. The victory moved the Pirates into quarter-final play. Marshfield moved out o a 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, and increased it to 25-13 at the! half. A rally by the Indians in the second quater pulled them up to three points and they rallied again; in the third. They couldnt com bat the rugged, hard-hitting Pi-; rates, however.
