Pruett Receives Comments On 'Music of Spheres' Article By J. HUGH PRUETT Astronomer, Oregon General I- Extension Division The discussion of the "music of the spheres" in this column last month brought the suggestion from some readers that perhaps the Pythagorean philosophers of ancient Greece and many as tronomers of later times were feally quite near the truth when they taught that the motions of the planets produced actual mu sical tones. These readers feel that all ce lestial order and action result in a vast and majestic harmony that Is closely akin to music. If we fall to sense it, the fault is with our power of perception. We may even be attuned to these univer sal harmonies, but still not rec ognize their source, Mr. H. R. H. of Portland won ders if in "thoughts silently out of the night" there is thus, "flow ing the thread of a lyric being Veterans Take to Air To Sell Real Estate HOLDREGE, Neb (U.R) Two army air force veterans have evolved a new way to "take a flier" in real estate. r A real estate agent, Warner Lundeen. and a former AAF pilot Ed Schoenthal, teamed up for a new type of airborne operation that of showing farm land ' from the air to prospective buyers. B., also of Portland, thus declared her faith: "Perhaps I am a Pythagorean. Why, of course there is music In the uni verse. Because our puny little ears can hear only certain tones doesn't prove that others are not there. That marvelous display of the aurora, which I watched from my home on a hill in the early morning hours a few years ago, was at times like a great symphony. I didn't just make up the thought; it impressed Itself on my whole being, Just as mu sic that is almost too grand and exquisite to bear. I was seeing the tones and harmonies that could not hear. "It is my belief not Just flight of fancy that musical compositions that endure through the centuries were in the first place harmonies of the universe captured by the souls of the com posers. I believe it was Mozart who, when asked how he created his beautiful music, insisted that he had no feeling of creating the melodies, but that he was mere ly the instrument through which they flowed; that when the mu sic came, it Just came and he couldn't say from where. "One day recently in a large and busy office, someone con nected a little radio, with a built in aerial, to the electric circuit The sweetest music played. And I marveled how in the din and uproar, and within the heavy walls of the building, there that music was vibrating around us all the time and we hadn't known it. "Beauty of colors, music, and rhythm of the universe are, firmly believe, all parts of the same thing which is of course beyond my comprehension." Were the ancient Pythagoreans crudely expressing a great unl versal truth, one far grander than their words implied? 'Shoplifting Overcoat' Gets Him 30 Days OMAHA, Neb. (U.R Many Omahans blossomed out in new clothes during the Christmas sea son, but Roy E. Mills wasn't able to show off a self-tailored job un til the season was over. Police pldked up Mills on sus picion and discovered his overcoat had been remodeled for "shop lifting purposes." Capt. Harry Green told Judge Perry. Wheeler the department would Ike to have Mills out of the way until the Christmas season was over. The judge obliged with 30 days.
