Dr Huesfis Installed By Science Academy ' The Oregon Academy of Sci ence installed Dr. Ralph Buskin Huestis, professor of Zoology in the University of Oregon, as its president for 1947, at recent ceremonies at Reed College, Portland. The academy members also vot ed University of Oregon Professor Dr. Warren D. Smith as president elect for 1917. to take office as president in January, 1948. By virtue of his office Dr. Smith serves as vice-president for 1947, Dr. Pierre Van Bysselberghe, professor of chemistry in the uni versity, was elected academy treasurer for this year, and Dr. Andrew F. Moursund, head of the university's mathematics depart ment, was named to succeed him self as chairman of the academy's mathematics section. Pinball License Plan Changed SPRINGFIELD The city council's finance committee Mon day night revised its proposals to license pinball machines and punchboards by adopting a license fee plan for distributors and a percentage tax on the devices. Previously the council had ap proved a plan to license both the machines and distributors. vunumiieenrcn stua ic wuuiu uci imDOssible to estimate accurately the revenue that would be derived from the new system but one dis tributor stated the income should be around $10,000 annually. Under the new plan distributors would be charged a $125 quarterly license. The machines would be assessed at 10 per cent of the gross. Collections would be made in the presence of a city employe and the payment is to be made at the time of collection, the commit tee stipulated. . Distributors of punchboards would be charged a $50 annual license. In addition the city would collect three per cent of the face value of each board. The monthly levy on Juke boxes was dropped from a proposed $5 to $2. The committee proposed no distributor's license. Hornbeck, ambassador to The Netherlands, resigned Tuesday and President Truman picked Herman B. Baruch to succeed him. The White House said the nom ination of Baruch, now ambassa dor to Portugal, will be sent to the Senate within a day or so. Baruch is'a brother of Bernard L. Baruch, the elder statesman. Presidential Press Secretary Charles G. Ross said Mr. Truman accepted the Hornbeck resigna tion with "reluctance." Hornbeck gave "personal" rea sons for resigning, Ross added. Orleinallv aDnolnted to The Netherlands post in September, 1944, Hornbeck first offered his resignation when the Truman ad ministration came into office in 1945. He was persuaded then to remain on the job. Marie Johnson Bebernes Marie Johnson Bebernes. 84, Junction City, died at a Eugene hospital Tuesday. Born Jan. 5, 1863, at Denmark, she married Nels Johnson at Omaha, Neb., March 10, 1885. He died in 1900, and in 1922 she was married to Soren Bebernes. He died in 1927. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Alice Jensen, Seattle, and Mrs. Helene Rubotton, Oakland, Calif.; three sons, John Johnson, Spokane, George, of Lincoln, Neb., AUord, of Junction City; a sister, Sena Petersen, Eugene; three brothers, Otto Wilde, Junction City, Adolph, of Junction City, and Jim Wilde, Washington; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Two grandchildren were killed during the war, and - four children preceded her in death. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Miller-Sherman Mortuary in Junction City.
