Judge Hurd laid gas revenues were up approximately 25 per cent, which means that Lane can expect approximately $90,000 more from this source. The funds will go for county roads. Oklahoma Railway union env ployes voted at 1 a. m. to remain in continuous meeting" rather than accent the board's recom mendatlons for a five cent hourly wage hike. Union officials denied that the decision to paralyze the city s street transportation system was a strike. S. Army's plan to crack the bar rier of sound with its new xs-i rocket plane next summer is doomed to disaster, Chief Test Pilot John Cunningham of the British De Havilland Aircraft Corp. said Friday. The army's first supersonic plane was successfully test- flown only a few days ago. I do not wish to say that this new rocket plane won't go through the wall of sound," Cunningham said. "But it is my opinion it won't. There is a vast multitude of difficulties in the way of that achievement." He predicted it would be 10 years before any pilot in any air craft could exceed the speed of sound and live to tell about it. "Attainable speeds are not limited by power," he said, "but by man's ability to control the aircraft at these great speeds. The planes don't behave like planes any more when they go that fast. "One of our British ships made sudden full right angle turn at 620 miles an hour for no reason. "Geoffery De Havilland of our concern was killed three months ago when his De Havilland Swallow came" apart for no rea son at 630 miles an hour. We still don t know what happened." SAN TRANCISCO (U.R) A judge has warned an Army colonel in Tokyo the officer will be treated like a private unless he was joking when he called a $10 traffice fine "extortion." Municipal Judge John J. Mc- Mahon said he had received a $10 che.ck from Col. M. B. Gullion in payment for a traffic citation against the colonel's wife for go ing through a stop sign last September. With the money, the colonel wrote a note which said: , . The $10 fine, instead of the usual $2 or $3, is considered by me as extortion." Replied the judge in a letter by return mail: I hope you were only lokine. colonel, because if you were not we will deal with you as you would with any private in your command who spoke to you like that." . : - Shanghai Stock Mart Climbs to New Record SHANGHAI (U.R) The Shanghai stock market sky rocketed to an all-time high Friday as operators who have been selling short for the last two months rushed to cover outstanding positions. At the same time, the U. S. dollar was quoted as a record high of 6400 Chinese dollars and gold bars sold at 320,000 Chinese dollars an ounce. Two main causes were ad vanced for the stock market boom. One was the expected stock exchange Holiday Dec. 20 when all outstanding transac tions must be completed. The other was T. V. The play will be given Thurs day, Dec. 18, starting at 9 a.m., at the McDonald Theater. Because of the number of children in the schools, it will be necessary to give two performances. Large Cast The cast of 26 taking part in the VLT nlav includes both adults and children. Business peoP'e have arranged to be free in the morning hours. The Junior Programs plan for furnishing worth-while entertain ment to children of the city has been carried out during each of the past eight years. It was started by Mrs. Kenneth Moore. Its board is made up of several interested organizations, Including the VLT, Mu Phi Epsilon and Phi Beta mu sic groups, the Welfare League, the Parent-Teacher Assn., the American Assn. of University Women, and the public schools. Three Shows Three performances of drama, dance or music usually are given in the course of each year, of which one usually is by a profes sional group brought in from out side. The high schools, the Uni versity of Oregon departments of music and drama and others have given assistance.
