Turks Maintain
Right lo Straits
ANKARA (U.R Turkey re
jected Soviet efforts to conduct
bilateral negotiations on the Dar
danelles Monday and proposed
instead an international straits
conference of Montreux Conven
tion signatories, except Japan,
plus the United States. . ,
A Turkish note to Russia, re
plying to recent Soviet proposals,
turned down the plan for joint
Soviet-Turkish defense of the
Dardanelles. It said Turkey con
sidered her exchange of views
with Russia, as envisaged at Pots
dam, was complete.
The Turkish government said it
felt Soviet fears of aggression
against Russia through the straits
should be allayed by the fact that
United Nations forces would aid
the national armies to defeat ag
gression from any quarter.

Goering Cheated Justice
LONDON W) George Ber

any assumption that Hermann
Goering s suicide was in any sense
a defeat for the victorious powers
must be classed "among the inani
ties that war always produces.
"Had the matter been in my
hands," Shaw said in a letter to
the Times, "I should have supplied
all the condemned men with
liberal supply of morphia tablets
and given them every opportunity
of sparing us the disgusting job of
hanging them."
