Oregon managed to hang onto the ball-except for one series of downs and was very sat isfied to squeeze through to a one-point- victory. The Oregon line, a big question mark until today, played very well in ta first part of the game but in the second half it was punched full of holes by a hard running COP fullback named Andy Hyduke. CALL 5869-1 Cooper Bros. Heat Service Co. 1345 East 22nd Eugene, Oregon But for the most part the famed Stagg flanker formations didn't give the Webfoots too much trou ble.. The Webfoots, whose own of lensive formations worked only spasmodically, enjoyed a statist!. cal advantage but it was not an overwhelming one. Oregon gained 198 yards from scrimmage and 37 from passes compared with 64 from scrim. mage and 100 from passing for CQP. Oregon rolled up a total of nine first downs to only three for the Tigers. Dream Backs Start Coach Oliver started his dream backfield of Leicht at left half, Newquist at right half, Duke Iver sen at quarterback and Bob Koch a fullback. The quartet showed great potentialities but bumped up against a really tough College of the Pacific line. Big Don Campora, a 245-pound freshman, was giving the Weh foots a lot of trouble all after noon along with a lot of other Tigers in the front line. It was plain from the start that the visitors were not going to be a pushover. Torvick kicked off and Oregon punted after two plays had gained only four yards, Wayne Hardin returned the kick to his own G5 and the Tigers moved into Oregon territory with a pass play, it was nullified, how ever, by a holding penalty against the Tigers. Hardin . then quick kicked to the . Oregon a i x and Leicht kicked out to the 47. Punt exchanges kept the Web foots in the hole until Newquist; got loose on a 36-yard gallop to the Pacific 33. Leicht behind some excellent blocking by Shaffer went to the 32 and to the six on two consecutive plays around op posite ends. The Oregon attack bogged down and four plays ad vanced the ball one yard short of the goal line. The Tigers kicked out but Ore gon was soon back knocking at the touchdown door again. New quist shot a pass to Leicht who took it on the seven and fell out of bounds. Four plays again failed. The Tigers advanced the ball out to the20 before Hardin fumbled to give Oregon - another scoring chance. End Art Milne recovered Har din's bobble on the 17. Leicht tried left tackle but a 15-yard holding penalty set the Webfoots back to the 31. Leicht, flashing the speed that won him acclaim last season, went around left end to the 15. A Leicht pass was incom plete and then he added six yards around left end. But it was fourth down and Newquist's attempted field goal was blocked by Cam pora. , Newquist Scores Bud Klein fumbled on the first play for the Tigers and Chuck El liott recovered it for Oregon on the five. The Webfoots were not to be denied this time and New er :ist, the prewar "Camas Cy clone,", took a reverse from Leicht and went over left tackle for the score. Leicht's dropkick for the extra point was perfect. ' The remainder of the quarter was a punting contest' and the half ended with Oregon out in hmm Wisconsin Trims California, 28-7 BERKELEY, Cal., Sent. 28 (U.R) Latent power hoarded by the University of Wisconsin came to life in the final quarter here Saturday before 50,000 sweltering spectators in Memorial Stadium to give the Badgers a 28-7 victory over the University of California in an intersectional football game. Held to a 7-7 tie for the first three quarters, the heavily-favored Badgers ripped the Golden Bears' line and skirted the ends in the final period to capture victory from a California team, which a few minutes before had threat ened to score a major early sea son upset. It was a well-balanced club which pulled the game out of the fire with the backfield and line changing honors in a wild battle marred by many penalties and some doubtful decisions by the officials. Wisconsin scored in the first six minutes of play with a series of passes setting up the touchdown. However, the Badgers had to for sake their aerial attack in favor of a ground assault in order to clinch their victory. Big Ben Bendnck circled the California end for the first Bad ger score and Listle Blackburn converted the first of four extra points he made during the after. noon. The Golden Bears tied score midway in the third quar ter following a scoreless second period in which the two bie ele vens struggled in vain in the 92- degree heat. The Bears backed the Badgers to the Wisconsin 14 from where Blackburn punted to Jack Jensen on the California 44. The reserve back took the ball, raced to the right side of the field, picked up some beautiful block ing and then reversed his field and dashed 56 yards for the Bears only touchdown. Paul Keckley kicked the extra point. From there on it was Wisconsin all the way as they pounded the California line to' pieces. John Pinnow intercepted a California pass on his own 32 and raced back to the Bears' 21 from where Gene Evans cracked over the nine-foot marker. - " 41 Katrnt Reirfater-Cnartl. Eugene. Ore.. Banday. The teams were still playing on even terms in the third period un til Hyduke started his campaign and moved Into the Webfoots' ter ritory to hte 21-yard line. The quickness of the Pacific touchdown in the fourth quarter stunned the spectators as well as tha Webfoots. But when Torvick's try for point went wide the Tiger hopes faded. They couldn't get an other drive going. With Leicht and Newquist both out of the game much of the time Halfback Bob Reynolds was called on to spearhead the Oregon of fensive. He was driving hard and throwing hard passes but he couldn't get his play going and his passes were hurried by a charging Tiger line. The Oregon offense showed a wide variety of plays, some from the T formation, some from a single wing and some from a dou ble wing. Backs, especially Leicht and Newquist, were alternating freely from one position to an other. Oregon attempted 18 passes and completed only five as against an even worse average of 21 and four for Pacific. But the Tiger's four completions produced a touchdown and 100 yards gained. In the kicking department the Webfoots showed talent with sev eral kickers averaging 43 yards on eight tries. Leicht's drop kick of the extra point was another out standing effort. Other league games will see Junction City travel to Cottage Grove, Lebanon goes to Redmond for a non-leasue tilt and sweet Home entertains Prineville in an other Kings X-er. ' Roseburg lived up to advance press notices in humiliating Leb anon 48-0 Friday night by flash ing a backfield and line that showed just about everything in good football. Uni-High was idle last week, resting up after their licking from Eugene High, that put several Tigers on the hospital list. Junction was handed a 7-8 lick ing at the hands of Toledo Friday night, while Cottage Grove played a Saturday afternoon contest with Reedsport Sweet Home was victorious over Willamina 19-0 and should go into the Prineville contest on even terms. Redmond will be heavily fav ored to win over Lebanon. The Axemen, after trampling little TJnt High in a ' non-league game 64-0, came up with a league triumph Friday with a convincing 20-0 vict'.ry over Springfield. Two league games are on ths slate for next Friday with Spring' field traveling to Corvallis and Salem going" to Albany. Neither Albany nor Salem has seen league action yet but the capital city club must be rated as a strong contender after non-league, vic tories over Lebanon and Klamath Fulls. The latter definitely stamps the Vikings as a powerful entry. Eugene and Bend will see action outside the league Friday against strong opposition. Eugene goes to Medford to play the perennially powerful Tigers and Bend goes to The Dalles to meet the conquer ors of Washington High of Port land. Medford has scored a 26-13 victory over Albany and a 39-0 romp over Coos Bay to date.
