Wednesday Eugene got two hun dredths of an inch of rainfall which is the total rainfall for the month. The average rainfall for the month of August has been forty seven hundredths of an inch. If August is to match that figure this year Friday, August 29, and Satur day, August 30, will have to pro duce nearly a half an Inch of rain fall. Manager of the store, Archie weinstein, had leased his own store and the up stairs of the building from the Schaefers family, and had re modeled the upstairs for 25 offices No tenants had moved into the offices, but some planned to move this weekend. Several hundred furs in the fire proof fur storage vault in the basement of Ardel's Store were saved, according to Kenneth R. Allen, insurance adjustor, who moved the furs to the basement of Kaufman's Store after the fire was under control. Fire Inspector tester Barker and Assistant Fir Chief Kar Hicks, aaid they believe th fire started near a stairway leading from Ardel's Star to the basement o th building. Smoke was discovered in Ar del's Store about 7:30 . m. by youngsters who had reported for work in the bean fields, but wno were returning home because of the weather. Starkweather; and Susan Brownhill, 12-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Brownhill, 1863 Moss St. Others who saw the curling smoke were Velma Casto and Evelyn Bryan, beauty operators on their way to work. A city po lice officer on the other side of the street was notified, and he in turn called the fire department. City firemen fought th fire from about 7:45 a. m. until it had been brought under control at 10:30 a. m. War Department Cuts Civilian Employe Rolls WASHINGTON M) Th War Department Thursday ordered a reduction of 53,079 in Its civilian employees throughout the country by October 1, to meet President Truman's and congressional econ omy orders. Under Budget Bureau instruc tion, total personnel will be re duced from 572,579 on the payroll July 31 to 519,500 by October. Maj. Gen. C. H. Bonesteal, president of the War Department Manpower Board, said orders for the cuts were being sent immedi ately to Army area headquarters and other installations. US to Request Island Control WASHINGTON W Senator Magnuson (D-Wash) reported Thursday he understood the United States will ask the United Nations next month for trusteeship of Japanese islands in the Pacific but a state department official said no such action was planned at that time. Magnuson told reporters he had been informed by high gov ernment officials, whom he did not name, that the application for sole trusteeship of the former enemy bases and islands would be made at the meeting of the U.N. General Assembly. "I do not believe there will be a single vote against giving us that authority," Mabnuson said.
