The new car arrived Wednesday afternoon. For the time being it will be used in conjunction with uie present and sometimes balky patrol car. Old Building Razed SPRINGFIELD One of this city's oldest buildings, between Fifth and Sixth on Main St., was razed this week to make way for the eventual erection of a new office building. The building was the old Radio Lab, erected about 1910 and slightly scorched in a fire two weeks ago that destroyed its mate, Wright's Hardware warehouse. Hamlin and Shockley, local real tors, report that as soon as build ing materials become more plenti ful they plan to erect a new real estate office. Mike Bainbridge, who formerly operated in the old building, re cently purchased the adjacent W. N. Long building, where the Radio Lab now is operating. On Flood Committee SPRINGFIELD Don Lane, secretary-manager of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, has ac- cepted an appointment as secre tary of the Willamette Valley Pro- 4-H Leaders Meet Saturday ine Lane County 4-H club leaders Assn. will hold a month ly meeting Saturday, Aug. 10, in the 4-H club building at the fair grounds. The meeting, which is scheduled for 10 a.m., will draw up plans for the district and county 4-H fairs which will be held on the following dates: Cottage Grove-Sept. 14. Florence Sept. 21. Lane County Sept 25 through 28. Problems of selecting Lane County 4-H exhibits and demon stration teams for the state fair, Sept 1 through 7, will also be dis cussed. The senior group will hold their meeting at 1:30 in the club building. A round-table discus sion on demonstrations and judg ing will highlight the afternoon meeting. SPRINGFIELD Eric Ostbon received a $25 fine and 90-day suspended sentence in Recorder's Court Wednesday on charges of drunk and disorderly conduct. Other fines this week included: Basic rule, 65 miles per hour in a 25 mile zone, $40; Clarence Thomas; stop sign, $5; Vernon Coe; overtime, $1 each: Adolph Ruthke, Evert Beck, E. C. Hendrickson, C. G. Gorrell; double parking, $1 each: Henry D. Long, Ruby A. Smith, Omar Cox. Attempt to Move Mello Franco Fails COOS BAY (U.Ki Attempts to move the Mello Franco, tied up here since June by a CIO-AFL jurisdictional dispute, had failed Thursday after the CIO Commit tee for Maritime Unity rejected a proposal to move the ship to New Westminster, B. C. The ship's captain requested that his vessel be allowed to shift but the-CMU insisted it remain where it was until the dispute was settled. The tie up began when CIO longshoremen refused to handle the ship's cargo because the crew was AFX,. La Paz, capital of Bolivia, was founded by the Spaniards in 1548. Iowa Man on UO Staff Named instructor in the Univer sity of Oregon for fall is Dr. Wil liam L. Winter, whose appoint ment was announced this week. A graduate of the State Univer sity of Iowa, Dr. Winter received his masters degree in 1942 and his doctoral-degree in 1946, both from the University of California at Los Angeles. From 1940 to 1942 he taught private classes in history, social studies, French, and Ger man, and in 1942 joined the staff at UCLA as research assistant in modern European history. He was also editorial associate of the Pa cific Historical Review at this time. From 1943 to 1945 he was special investigator in social serv ice for Los Angeles county.
