Aug. 1 (API Strength was displayed by individual favorites in today's stock market but, while the aver ages advanced a shade for the seventh straight session, many leaders acted a bit fatigued. Transfers were in the neign borhood of S00.0OO shares. N. Y. Sc Harlem, an odd-lot Issue, made one of Its Infrequent appearances on the ticker tape and was up 25 points at 310 on a few shares. Officials View Bread Price WASHINGTON P The. gov-. eminent is trying to reach a de. cision on whether to allow price increases of a penny a loaf on bread and about a cent a pound on flour. Top OPA and Agriculture De partment 'officials conferred on this as the new price decontrol board pushed plans to start public hearings by August 12 on this issue: Should price ceilings be restored August 20 on meats, dairy prod' ucts, grains, cotton seed and soy beans? Chairman Roy L. Thompson announced Wednesday night that as soon as the board has decided this, it will tackle the question of whether controls should go back on eggs, poultry, tobacco and petroleum. . Ceilings cannot be re-Invoked on these latter items before Aug ust 20 in any event, nor thereafter without consent of the board. As for the possibility of higher bread- and flour prices, an official in a position to know told a re. porter privately that a boost in ceilings has been recommended to OPA Chief Paul Porter by his aides. However, even if Porter con curs, the approval of the Agricul ture Department is required to put increases on these food items into effect. The recommendation submitted to Porter Is based on a tentative decision against restor ing the flour subsidy which lapsed July 1. In this decision OPA of ficials took the stond that the subsidy could be paid again only if the decontrol board votes to re store ceilings on wheat.
