Peasant Supreme- Leader Lui Taruc scheduled a conference with Philippine Pres. Manuel Roxas as a prelude to returning to the prov inces to make a personal appeal for an end to the bloodshed. - Taruc was closeted for . four hours with Interior Secretary Jose Zulueta and afterward an nounced that an offer he had ten dered to make last-minute peace appeals had been accepted by the secretary. Taruc will be accom panied on the mission by a mem ber of the interior department with an escort of Philippine army military police. The situation between the peas ants (Hukbalahaps) and the MP's has been growing steadily worse and it was considered doubtful whether Taruc, wartime under ground peasant leader, would be able to avert large scale fighting. Privately, both the government and 1 peasant factions have ex pressed slight hopes for peace. Hours of Sewing Produces Oregon Turkey Feathers Gown A hobby of making hats and turkey feathers for millinery and purses from leathers of Oregon birds culminated recently in the creation of an evening gown made of feathers from Oregon turkeys. Mrs. Barbara Orr, Roseburg, is the energetic seamstress who sew ed 1800 hours on the gown. A large picture of the dress has been sent to the Oregon Turkey Im provement Assn. booth at the Na tional Turkey Show at St. Louis, Mo. A picture of the gown, in colors, will also be placed in the window of the J. C. Penney store, in Eugene, by Moderne Studios. I Used in the dress were 160 yards ; of feathers sewn on tape. The ; tape was then sewn to a cloth ' evening dress. Each leather over- j laps another both vertically and ; horizontally, so that only a quarter j of each feather actually shows, j This method of overlapping brings ' out the brilliance of each feather, ! Mrs. Orr says. ' The white cape of the gown and ruffles on the skirt are fash- 1 ioned of the fluff feathers of the ' White Holland turkey, -nd the j body- of the gown from the Nar- I ragansett and Bronze turkeys. All 1 feathers used were from turkeys I raised on Oregon farms. Mrs. ,Orr's ambition now is to make a dress using turkey feath ers from every state in the union. Broadway Federal Judges' Pay Bill Goes to Truman WASHINSTON OP) The House Saturday passed and sent to the White House a Senate approved bill increasing salaries of federal judges $5000 yearly. More than 300 judges, ranging from those on the district bench to the chief justice, will get the pay boost. It will be their first since 1926. Cost of the raise is estimated at $1,500,000 annually. Airfield Operators Ask Modified Rules PORTLAND OP) Pcni1Hn. more lenient than those of the Civil Aeronautics Administration were recommended by Oregon flight operators Saturday to the State Board of Aeronautics. . The operators, reporting that establishment of CAA rules would leave just 14 men in buslnes to the state, proposed temporary waivers to enable operators to fulfill building requirements. They recommended a year's postponement in requiring an in itial $10,000 plant, and elimina tion of a state examination on weather and navigation. Other recommendations In cluded allowing operators to maintain auxiliary fields for In struction, and requiring an 1800 by 300 foot runway.
