' Members of the Paletteen en tertained 18 art teachers from the district at a tea held in thu new partially finished Paletteer room March 6. from 4 to 6. The club will hold open house sosme time this week, when the Paletteers room will be com pleted. Paletteers are purchasing their own art library for the room by collection of dues. In order to amplify the fund they hope to have a coke machine, with profit which will go Into the library, also. They also purchased the Capehart collection of famous paintings, the Oregon Journal collection of old and new masters and the portfolio of famous American painters. Paletteers Intend to order a year's subscription to Readers Digest, Fortune, American Artist, and Design. The room has been designed chiefly for relaxation when stu dents can study on art work during study halls. Retail Sales Here Rise 15 Per Cent Retail sales in Eugene jumped 16 per cent during the month of January, the Associated Press re ports. The census bureau reported that the month was swamped with shoe and clothing sales. Oregon shop pers spent $1.31 for shoes com pared with every dollar marked up a year ago. A 28 per cent boost was shown in men's clothing sales, with an equal gain in merchandise from family clothing stores. Flowers were popular for every dollar spent a year ago, $1.20 was paid last month. The state's Independent dealers handling all types of goods re ported a sales gain ot 11 per cent Overseas Wac May Follow Hubby Home "A woman serving overseas with the women's army corps may request return for duty in the United States when her husband is returned to this country from a permanent overseas assignment with any of the armed forces," Lt. Elsie K. NedroW, local wac enlistment officer, announced Tuesday. The new ruling applies to army nurses, hospital dieticians and physical therapy aides, as well as wacs, the recruiter said. Theater commanders are au thorized to return for duty in the United States any woman officer. woman warrant officer or enlist ed woman, upon her request and presentation of satisfactory evi dence that her husband has been returned to the states for reas signment, hospitalization or hon orable discharge. , The new ruling, which applies only to women overseas, Is in ad dition to an older policy with re gard to married members of the women's army corps whose hus bands have been discharged for medical reasons. In this case, consideration Is given to the circumstances aris ing out of the wac's husband's discharge from any of the armed forces or from the merchant ma rines for disability or his reten tion In the service for medical treatment. Navy Recruiting Record Records for the past 11 months were shattered in February in the j navy's No. 1 recruiting program the enrolling ot radio technician (radar) trainees it was an nounced by W. E. Bell, chief spe cialist of the Eugene navy recruit ing station. Enlistments in this recruitment branch surpassed any other single month's performance1 back to March of last year, Bell said, and was one of the best months since R. T. procurement began nearly three years ago.
