Strategic Italian Peak Recaptured ROME, Feb. 21 M American troops striking over Italian moun tain terrain so forbidding that at times they used ropes to scramble up the steep slopes, have captured Monte Belvedere and several vil lages on the peaks west of the Pistoia-Bologna highway. The Germans fought back vi ciously, but all counterattacks were repulsed and the fighting for the dominant heights continues, an allied communique said today. Once before allied troops had held the commanding, 3,500-foot peak of Monte Belvedere, but the nans recaptured it- last Nov. 28 and had held it since. Patrols continued to be very ac tive on the rest of the Italian front, with no changes of position re ported. The Germans still were peppering allied positions with propaganda leaflets. Grange Seeks Hall The Santn Clara trance Tues day night launched plans to push a campaign for funds to erect a grange hall, with the naming of a committee to Investigate ways and means. The committee is composed of Mr. and Mrs. O. K. Baldwin, Mrs. C. D. Chezem, Mrs. Roy Overgard, Mrs. Victor Chapman, Mr Emer ick, Mrs C. 5. Sederlin and Mrs. S. S. George, At the meeting In the Santa Clara school Emerlck was elected assistant steward and Mrs. George was elected Seres. The next meeting will feature a 15th anniversary program and there will be a potluck supper starting at 8:30 p. m. There was a box supper after Tuesday night's meeting. Born in Polk county, Wisconsin, Sept. 14, 1869, she came to Eugene nearly 60 years ago, in 1887, from South Da kota. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Otto Koppe, Eugene, and Mrs. Harold Bessonette of Swiss home; three sons, Guy Koepp, Hollywood; Bert and Ray Koepp of Eugene; 14 grandchildren and s i x great - grandchildren ; one brother, Will Baker of Crescent City, Calif. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Simon mortuary, Rev. V. T, Speece offi ciating. Burial will be in the IOOF No. 1 cemetery. Shea today imposed prison sent ences on three officials of the Rtngllng brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus and sent three other circus men to jail, all for involuntary manslaughter in con nection with the circus fire here last July which claimed 168 lives. Those sentenced were George W. Smith, SI, general manager and Leonard S. Aylesworth, 42, chief tent man, two to seven years in state prison, James A. Haley, 46 year old vice-presidSnt and director, one '.o five years in .state prison. Edward R. Versteeg, 44, chief electrician, and William Caley, 35, chief seatman, one year in the county jail. They are all from Sar asota, Fla. David W. Blanchfield, 87, chief truckman, Hartford, six months in jail. At the same, time Judge Shea fined the Rlngllng brothers, Bar num and Bailey Combined Shows, Inc., the official name of the con cern, $10,000. All of the defendants and the corporation itself had pleaded no contest to Involuntary manslaugh ter and before passing sentence Judge Shea remarked that this was "equivalent to a plea of guilty." The company's employes are now represented by the Plywood and Veneer Workers local 9-233, affiliated with the Plywood, Box, Shook and Door council, district No. 9 (CIO). The hearing -was orlglnal.y scheduled for Teb. 10 but was postponed because of the NLRB's failure to notify ill in terested parties. Smith, professor of geology and head of the de partment of geography at the Um versity of Oregon, will discuss the Philippine islands before mem bers of the Active club at their noon luncheon in the Eugene hotel Thursday, Smith, who was chief of the bureau of mines at Manila, P. I., from 1807 to 1914 and again in 1920 and '22, will attempt to clari fy questions brought up by cur rent world events. He is the author of numerous scientific papers and press articles and of the book "Geology and Mineral Resources of the Philip pine Islands." ' , Rations On Canning Sugar To Be Cut WASHINGTON, Feb. 21 (U.R) Rations of sugar for home can ning this year will be smaller and will be harder to get, the of fice of price administration re vealed today. Under a drastically curtailed rationing program, 20 pounds will be the limit ot the canning allow ance for one person. Any one fam ily will be held to 160 pounds of canning sugar. No 'ration stamps will be vali dated for canning sugar. Accord ingly, you can not take stamps to the grocer and obtain canning 3tigar, as in former years. Instead, stamp No. 13 is to be affixed to an application to the ration board, this for Identification purposes only. AU allotments will be made di rectly by local ration boards. Ra tions will be determined accord ing to an OPA scale of estimates, with a limit of one pound of sugar for each four quarts of fruit or fruit juices. Alvadore Man Held On Charqe of Death Threat Carl Rowe, 40, of Alvadore was bound over to the grand Jury in the local Justice court Wednesday on a charge of threatening to com mit a felony. He waived prelim inary hearing and Justice Brown ell fixed his ball at $1900. The Information, signed by Fred Mallloux, police officer at Junc tion City, charged the. defendant with threatening his wife, Jean, by allegedly saying to her "I've told you the only way you'll leave me is In death, and if you don't drop this case, this is It.
