Convene On Monday
Lane county convention of
Christian churchei will hold its
70th convention Monday, Jan. 8.
from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., at
the Santa Clara Church of Christ.
Rev. Jean Shelley will serve as
chairman, Mrs. Shelley as pianist,
and Ralph Holcomb as song-leader
for the day.
Morning sermons will be given
by Bruce Jones and Ralph Kel
leth, and Rev. L. P. Nebelung of
Cottage Grove will be the after
noon speaker. A potluck luncheon
will be held at noon. Music and
devotions will accompany both
morning and afternoon programs.

To Honor Pastor
A special program of service

oring the pastor, Donald Burke,
ond his wife, who recently resign
ed to enter Philips university at
Enid, Okla. Mr. Burke has served
the church for more than three
years, while a student at North
west Christian college.
To succeed him, his brother,
Hermon Burke, has been called as
pastor, the latter also a student at
the Eugene colleje. Both are sons
of Mrs. Kendall E. Burke, of Eu- ;
gene and their late lather was the
president of Northwest Christian

Mattresses Will Be
Used To Make Paper
Supplies of writing paper may
be augmented somewhat through
the disposal of used mattresses
by the office of surplus property
in Washington, D. C, according
to a news release from the pro
curement division of the war de
partment. The mattresses have been
shipped from various army posts
and warehouses In the states of
Washington, Oregon and Mon
tana, to St. Louis, Mo., Baltimore,
Md., and Stevensport, Neenah
and Appleton In Wisconsin. Ma
terial will be salvaged for mak
ing paper.

Escaped Prisoners
Nabbed After Gunfight
BAKER, Jan. 6. 04s) Clarence
W. Harlan, 17, Visalia, Cal., es
caped federal prisoner from an
Emmett, Idaho, jail, was wounded
critically in the abdomen and his
companion, Timothy Berkeley, 17,
of Utah, also an escaped federal
prisoner, was jailed following a
running five minute gun battle
with state police officers near
Baker at 9:45 Thursday night.
The youths fired on the state
police car two miles east of Baker
when Officers Leo Suydam and
Sergeant Curtis Chambers pur
sued a stolen Huntington car. The
youths used pistols they are re
puted to have taken when they
overpowered a guard at Emmett
