It was an engagement between tanks and warships and the tanks won. But the episode also had an other strange angle. It almost never happened, first, because the report of a Canadian scout car platoon commander was not believed immediately; and sec ond, because the Germans mis took the Canadians for nazi para troopers. The incident began when a Canadian company reached the Dutch village of St. Pilllpsland and received a report that a Ger man naval force was less than 2 miles away, in Zijpe harbor of Schouwen island. The platoon commander de cided to investigate. He climbed a water tower, from where he saw figures in German naval uni forms strolling on the jetties at Zijpe and a German flag flying on what appeared to be a con ning tower. The commander reported his findings but they were not ac cepted immediately and he with held further action until later in the afternoon when a brigadier arrived. After the brigadier arrived and confirmed the Canadian com mander's report the platoon start ed moving up with tanks and one 17-pourlder, two 8-pounders, and two 3-inch mortars. Just before dusk, the Canadians opened a bombardment. The enemy guns attempted to reply but were si lenced in 10 minutes. During the night, mortar flares lit up the harbor. In the morn ing, 43 men with three .officers pushed off from St. Phlllipslanid in a fishing schooner, - a cutter, and a police boat and landed be hind Zijpe harbor under- cover of a second barrage. - In the harbor were 3 sunken landing craft and a blazing ship of the corvette type, surrounded by a sea of flaming oil. Despite the fires, the "naval" force boarded the ship "AF92" which once carried 80 to SO men, two 88's, and two 4-barreled 20 cc guns. On the bridge, which had been shattered by the 17-pounder, lay the body of the German naval commander, his hands In his pockets. Beside him lay the ship's log, with the last entry "Ver sunken." Lutherans To Aid New Guinea Hospital CHICAGO Wl The Women's Missionary federation of the American Lutheran church has allocated $75,000 of Its 1945-46 biennial budget to rebuild the bombed-out Amele hospital at Finschhafen, New Guinea. The federation allocated $310.. 000 for various projects, includ ing the New Guinea hospital and $100,000 for two training schools for pastors. Sites for the pro posed schools remain to be se lected. The federation said they would be in southern Texas and Alabama. . Down Front By WiU Uatiity At the Ilelllr: ATLANTIC CITY Republic's first big musical will probably appeal more to those who can remember the colorful era from 1913 to 1920 during which the action takes place. Film sketches the career of a publicist-producer and his efforts to put Atlantic City's pier on the map. His many money-making schemes constantly keep him quarreling with his wife, but love triumphs over adversity. Chief recommendation and criti cism is the fact that the picture is too well dated. When Fox does one of its historical musicals, which is as good a name as any for that type of film ("Sweet Rosy O'Grady," "Hello. Frisco, Hello," "Coney Island"), It Is careful to modernize everything until the old-timers probably couldn't recognise either the scenery or the characters. Re public, on the other hand, has kept banjos in the orchestras and has used several famous old acts, including Belle Baker, Joe Frisco, Gallagher and Shean and Van and Schenck. Constance loore and Brad Taylor carry the leads, and Jerry Colonna and Charley Grapewln carry the rest of the cast. Louis Armstrong does some fine trump eting. Production, musical score and photography are only aver age.
