Beaver Chews Tree, Starts Forest Fire Possibly because University of Oregon is used to breaking up ef forts by beavers, it was quite nat- ! ural for a U.O. professor to be called on wnen a xamiiy or oeav- ers on the McKenzie chewed down a tree and started a forest fire in peculiar fashion last week. It all happened one night last week up the McKenzie. Profes sor Kenneth Shumaker, erstwhile summer forester, and his fire sup pression crew were sleeping soundly when a radio fire call from Willamette Forest Ranger G. H. Ward routed them out. Grab- bing hoes, axes and extinguishers i they shot off to the point of action on the McKenzie, where a large "'" ."'- ,. . oiiuiiiarc( anu ills sweating crew quickly corralled the fire and kept it from jumping to an adjacent logging slash and . catastrophe. After the fire was completely out Shumaker backtracked to find the cause. It was quickly apparent, into the river drift and had short circuited. Thinking at first the power line had been defective Shumaker investigated and found that over the fallen line lay a fresh, vigorous-looking tree. That's where the beavers came in. Quick examination of the tree showed telltale beaver teeth marks. Scouting around the vi cinity it took no time for the col lege professor to deduct that a family of beavers was busy work ing on the trees in the area. Shumaker, while holding to the theory that such sabotage could be expected of Japs and other such, but hardly from honored inhabi tants of the "Beaver" state, nev ertheless directed his crew in fell ing the remainder of the trees the busy beavers had been chewing on. And they didn't fell them in such a way as to contribute to a beaver dam either. Fact is Shu maker and his crew fouled up what progress the beavers had already made. Which should be a warning or something for other beavers along the McKenzie to check on nearby power lines be fore crying "Timber." Less Civilian Meat Seen This Winter WASHINGTON Wt Reflect ing reduced supplies and a lower level of livestock production, civ ilian meat supplies during the fall and early winter may be 8 or 10 per cent below those available in the first half of this year. This forecast was given by the agriculture department in a re port on the food situation which said that food supplies as a whole will be relatively plentiful during the fall and winter. Reduced supplies of meats and dairy products will be offset, the report said, by larger supplies of fresh fruits and vegetables and cereal products. The department said the civilian food supply is being maintained at present levels despite large war requirements because of the "tre mendous increase" in total food production since the beginning of the war. The volume of agricul tural production of foods for sale and farm use in 1944 Is expected to be 38 per cent above the 1935 39 average and almost S per cent larger than last year. Most of this increase over 1943 will be in food grains principally wheat fruits, truck crops and rneats. The department said meat pro duction this year probably will reach 23,000.000.000 pounds, dress ed weight, or the largest of rec ord. The greater portion of this production came In the first half of the year, however. Because storaee facilities were not ade quate to carry over any larger quantities of meat from periods of peak production to the latter pan of the year, civilian consumers benefited from large supplies aur ing the spring and summer. The department said that dur ing the coming months, seasonal increases are expected in beef and veal production. But they will be offset by an expected decrease of 15 per cent In the production of pork. Dr. J. C. Pedestrian Toll Drops 23 Per Cent SALEM Pedestrian fatali ties in Oregon during the first six months of 1944 dropped 23 per cent under the total reported for the same period of 1(43, Secretary of State Robert S. Farrell, Jr., dis closed here. Thirty pedestrians were killed in traffic during the first half of this year compared with 39 for the i same period a year ago.
