Two Bombs Dropped I looked up and saw two bombs plummeting into the roadside less than 100 yards ahead. The ground belched up in two great inverted cones of earth, steel and flame. Lankford and I crawled under the jeep s dashboard or maybe it was the seat while rocks and chunks of earth rattled down. I didn't pray or live life over. I was just plain scared. Then we heard screaming dive- bomber motors and we raced into the fields to avoid strafing that never came. As we looked up from a shallow ditch three fighter bombers raced away. Writer's Eye Bleeding - Rowell and Lowrey were not hurt, but my eye was bleeding. In about 15 minutes a first-aid man, Pvt. Albert Gillespie, Charlottesville. Va.. came tn look at my eye. When I leave in a couple of days I'll ride in a jeep whose springs are in some ambulance carrying wounded who probably would notice how it rode if it didn't move so smoothly. Low Attendance Schools Permitted To Continue Petitions of three rural school districts of the county to hold school during the coming year, notwithstanding each had an av erage daily attendance the past VPflr nf lfS than civ mora avanian by the county boundary board at a sessiun weanesaay. xney are Deadmond's Ferry (district 49), Deadwood (district 112), and Idle wyld (district 187). The law requires districts with such low attendance to petition the beard to be allowed to hold school before they can receive the regular apportionment of school funds. A petition to transfer territory from-Central (district 44), to Ve neta (district 28), was presented to the board and the county school superintendent was directed to send notices to the districts, call ing a hearing before the board August 1 at 10 a.m. Hie board postponed action on a petition requesting the transfer of territory .from Mount View (dis trict 128) to Blue Mountain (dis trict 31). Three men ially diseased Japanese, who were moved from a war relocation au thority camp to the Idaho state hospital, will be brought to the Oregon state hospital at Pendle ton, the state board of control has voted. The patients, two of whom were from Portland and one from Hills boro, will be brought to the Ore gon institution at the request of the state of Idaho. Some doubt concerning the wis dom of the move was expressed by the board, as State Treasurer Leslie M. Scott wondered what the "marines on Saipan" would think of the move. Secretary of State Robert S. Farrell Jr. sug gested shooting them as the quick est and most effective way of solving the problem. One of the patients Is a woman. PFC. Don Vern Eastman, Jr., son of Mr. and D. V. Eastman of Wendlini wounded fall in the south Pacific where he served with the V. 3. marine corps, and was awarded the order of the purple heart. NAGLE ENDS BASIC Aviation Cadet William Nagle, Jr., has completed basic flying i training at Gardner Field, Cali- i fjrnia. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Nagle, 2024 Univer sity street, Eugene. He was ac cepted as an aviation cadet in No vember, 1943, at Santa Ana, Calif. He formerly attended Uni versity high school.' BROTHERS IN SERVICE ' The two sons of Mrs. Vada Ferguson, 2192 Onyx, the Wiebke brothers, are in different branches of service. Earl Wiebke, machin ist's mate 2-c, is with the naval seabees in England. He trained at Camp Peary, Va., and in Rhode Island end New York. Pvt. Wil liam Wiebke has been studying flexible gunnery at Gardner Field and Yuma, Ariz. COOK IN TRAINING Sgt. Bryon K. Cook, 1687 Pearl j street, has been taking final train inff as member of a Flvinff Fort- ! ress crew at Pyote, Tex., as an j engineer. SON WRITES Mrs. Ella Bray, 344 Third Ave- ! I nue east, has word from her son, Sgt. Alvin H. Bray, who is in Eng land, that he is to have a furlough soon, but will have to spend it in England or Scotland. He says, "You can see by this how much j we are worrying about the Ger mans; I'll bet they aren't giving 1 furloughs to their men!" Sergeant Bray works in per sonnel in replacements. TRAINING COMPLETED Paratrooper Lonnie C. Mouldet has completed-four weeks of jump 1 1 training at Fort Benning, Ga. Sergeant Mouldet's wife, Mrs. Bessie A.
