Idaho Sawmill Men Refuse To Work IXWISTON, Ida, July 1 -Operations virtually were ceased at the huge Clearwater plant ef the Fotlach Forests, Inc, today when nearly 1,000 day sawmill workers refused to go on shift. Work stoppage began last night when 200 night shift employes in the production department of the rafll refused to continue work ow a dispute centering around alteration of the day and night shift. - The union is demanding a monthly rotation of the day and night shifts with differential pay for night workers. The workers now are rotated every two months. The company objected to the change, holding that it lowers efficiency, results in less pro duction and presents a tremens dous problem in keeping time records. The company offered the work ers several alternatives a 80 dsy ' rotation policy with differ ential pay for the night shift; a three-month and two-month ro tation with differential pay for the night shift workers, or a 30 day shift change without differ ential pay. The union was meeting today to consider the company's offers. . . . . Japs Refuse Induction, Get Prison Sentences DENVER. July 1.IU.R) Eleven American-born Japanese youths who refused to enter the army on the grounds their rights as citi zens had been removed when they were evacuated from the west coast, today were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 10 to 18 months. The defendants, all from the Amache relocation center in south eastern Colorado, were found guilty by U. S. District Judge J. Foster Symes, who said it was not his court's duty to rule upon the fairness of the evacuation of Jap-anese- Americans. New Skybus Planned By Douqlas Aircraft SANTA MONICA, Cal., July 1 flJ.R) The Douglas Aircraft Co. to day announced plans for a high' wing, twin-engine feederline air plane for post-war operations in the united States and abroad. The skybus is designed to car ry 24 passengers and cargo and will be constructed to take off and land on small airports. The plane's fuel capacity will be 300, gallons with an operating range of 600 miles. Mrs. Emma Miller Mrs. Emma Miller, 68, native of Oregon died Friday morning at her home in Walterville. She was born as Emma Martin at Lafayette, June 22, 1876. She was married at Perrydale, Ore., March 29, 1884, to John Vernon Hubbard, who died in 1932, She was married to George W. Miller In February, 1943. Except for a few early years spent in Washington, she had lived all her life in this state. Mrs. Miller is survived by her husband and six sons and daught ers: Mra. Sadie Hllah Crawford of Cottage Grove; Vernon Hub bard, Lowell Hubbard, and Lloyd Hubbird. all of Springfield, Route 2; Roy Hubard of Willamina; and Mrs. Zena Morgan of Sweet Home; 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Phil Bartholomew mortuary in Springfield Monday at 2 p. m., Rev. E. J. Fulton officiating. In terment will be in the Masonic cemetery at Cottage Grove. Mrs. Gunhilde Stee Mrs. Gunhilde Stee, 79, who with her husband has been a resi dent at Sunset Lutheran home for the past 12 years, died Friday afternoon there. She was born in Iowa, March 15, 1865, and was married to A. A. Stee at Decorah, Iowa. They made their home in that state until 1927, when they came to Oregon. They had lived at Silverton for several years, before moving to Eugene. . Mrs. Stee is survived by her husband and one adopted daugh ter. Mrs. Emma Storebv of Crookston, Minn. Other relatives live' in, the eastern states and Canada. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a. m. at the Veatch - HolllnRsworth mortuary. Rev. H. J. Today they have pro duced 800,000 tons of synthetic rubber and have proven for all time that the United States is de pendent on no other 'country for rubber; indeed they have solved Americas transportation prob lem." Famed German General Von Arnim in U. 5. 'WASHINGTON, July 1. (U.R) Col. Gen. Jurgen von Arnim, Ger man commander-in-chief captured In north Africa in the spring of 1943, is a prisoner of war in the United States, the war department disclosed today. "Col. Gen. von Arnim passed through Washington, D. C, recent ly on his way to a prisoner-of-war camp," a brief announcement said. "Gen. von Arnim, who was cap tured in the Tunisian campaign, was transferred from a plane to a train in a routine procedure and talked to no one while in Wash ington." Vera Frances Mitchell Miss Vera Frances Mitchell of Route 5 Eugene, died Saturday at a local hospital. She was born at Lewiston, 111., Jan. 18. 1915. For the past ten years, she had been a resident in Eugene and was especially active in young people's work at First Baptist church. Because of her death, a picnic planned for Baptist young folk Saturdoy night has been postponed. Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. C. Blunt: one sister, Ernestine M. Mitchell.
