Baptists To Picnic July 4th Annual picnic of the First Bap list church and Sunday school will be held Tuesday, July 4, at the Kuscne fairgrounds, from 10-30 a. m. to 4 p. m. Leo Deffen bacher is general chairmJn in charge of arrangements. The program will Include base ball, games, races, stunts, slides and a wading pool for small chil dren. A patriotic service will be conducted by Norton Pengra and Dr. V. H. Webster, following the basket dinner at noon. Tickets for Ice cream and pop will be given to each one in the Sunday school classes on Sunday. Church Notes At the Congregational church, Sunday at eleven o'clock, Miss Betty Chidlaw, summer soloist, will sing "Before the Crucifix," by Frank La Forgo. Rev. Wesley Goodson Nicholson will speak on "Our Hope." This will be Mr. Nicholson's last service before leaving for his vacation. The church will hold services through out the summer. Guest preachers for the period when the pastor will be absent will be as follows: July B, Dr. Robert E. Cushman; July 16 and 23, Dr. Quirlnus Breen; Muly. 30 end- August 6, Dr. W. B. Merrlam. Miss Chidlaw will be guest soloist. Sunday school will continue at 9:45 throughout the summer. MARINES, Saipan, June 27 (Delayed) UJJ I spent three hours on the high, craggy crest of Mt. Tapotchau Monday. During 70 minutes of that time I was pinned flat on my stomach in a shallow hole gouged from rock, while Japanese snipers wounded two nearby marines and killed one. I wanted to see what breed of men had captured that peak, which serves as an observation post and commands the entire island. Beachhead Bloody They had fought their way from the bloody beachhead of Charan Kanoa to the summit to 1,554-foot Tapotchau .in 11 days, capturing the peak at 11 a. m. June 25. These leatherneck assault forces had only one day of respite from fighting during that fierce U-day campaign. I hiked through sniper country to the crest June 26 with a group of eight stretcher bearers. We trudged over rock that cut through the composition soles of my marine combat shoes. As the men reached the summit tliey spotted many Jap anese moving to the top from the Garapan side of he mountain. "We killed about 20 of them and drove off the rest," he said. "Then we spent all afternoon picking them off and ducking their rifle and machine gun fire." Japs Try Bayonets The first night the Japanese tried to infiltrate. They succeed ed in inflicting some casualties on the Americans, but many enemy night prowlers were killed. The Jans came armed with bay onets securely tied to the end of eight-foot bamboo poles and tree branches. They'd try to Sneak up near a marine fox-hole and then jab into the hole, attempting to kill or wound the leathernecks. Before the Japs on the lower forward ridge pinned us down with machine-gun and rifle fire which chipped the rocks around the hole I shared with five mar, ines, I was able to view the north, em end of Saipan with the naked eye. That's where the final battle for Saipan will be fought. The terrain looks favorale for Amer ican tanks and the whole moun tain crest gives us superb spotting for artillery or other types of ob servation. . Capture of the Mt. Tapotchau summit will greatly help the final phase of the Saipan fighting. Be fore its capture, the Japs could observe all American activities. Now we can observe theirs and the toughest, ' most rugged section of Saipan terrain is in our hands, although the northern and eastern slopes are not yet secured at this writing.
