Sold to Howards
FLORENCE The Munsel Lake
resort owned and operated the
past IS years by Mr. and Mrs.
George C. Basford and her father,
Fred Ludford ot Eugene, has been
sold to Mr. and Mrs. Henry How
ard of Glendale, Oregon. The new
owners have been hotel operators
for several years and plan making
several additions and improve
ments to the resort. The Basfords
will retain their newly completed
home adjoining the lake resort
Tuberculosis Christmas seals
will go on sale Monday, Nov. 22,
throughout western Lane county,
with the Health association mem
bers stuffing and mailing 679 let
ters tor the area.
Booths will be maintained at the
Florence postbfftce by the Theta
Rho girls, that persons not includ
ed in the mailing list may secure
the seals and contribute toward
the annual tuberculosis Christmas
seal campaign.

years. Funeral and burial services
were held at Battleground, Wn.,

dents of Cushman in 1929 and 1930

Owens Lumber company. Mrs,
Gruber will return here Sunday
to make her home for the time

FLORENCE The senior class
of Siuslaw high school gave a

gym-auditorium Friday night to
which they Invited (at a small
cost) the other classmen, Mapleton
high school, and the Florence
grade school eighth grade. Funds
will be used to help finance the
annual senior skip day.
Marian Michael Fraer was ar
rested recently by Ed Tatom and
charged with maintaining a gam
bling game and to soliciting to
minors on the streets. He was also
arrested by State Officer Albright
and charged with selling liquor
(beer) to minors at a profit. When

cafe for luncheon and a business
meeting. Two new mergers were
taken into the club, Cecil Beck
and Carl Bragg. Rev. George Har

talk. There will be no meeting
Thursday as it Is Thanksgiving.
The foUowing Thursday, Dec. 2,
the club will have ita annual ban
quet honoring members of the
football team. The dinner will be
at 6:30 p.m. at the high school.
The Business and Professional
Women's club met at the home of
Mrs. William Peterson recently for
dessert. It was voted to contribute
$25 to the Chinese nurses fund.
Mrs. H. B. Breedlove, state chair
man, gave a report on the state
board meeting in Salem which she
attended. The next meeting will
be Dec. 1, with Miss Evelyn
Veatch and Mias Delia Gallo as

College ot Ensign Laura Janelle,
daughter of Mrs. J. A. Janelle of
Gardiner. Miss Janelle who en
listed last October In the WAVES
haa been stationed in Washington,
D.-C, with the navy hydrographic
department since completion of
training at the U. S. naval train
ing school at Stillwater, Okla.
Following a short visit at her
home in Gardiner late in Septem
ber, ahe reported for officer train
ing a Smith College, completing
the course there In eight weeks.
Upon graduation she enjoyed a
tour-day furlough with her sister,
Mrs. Phillips Jacques, in Wor.

for her new assignment at the U.

from Lt. Margaret Steelhead,
WAC recruiting officer, two sixth
graders of Reedsport grade school,
Milan Lockett and Lois Ann Leach
aged 11 and 10 years respectively,
won first and second places in a
county-wide essay contest on the
subject-"Why I Would Like to
Join the WACS, and Replace a
Battle Casualty." The contest was
sponsored by the Oregon recruit
ing and induction district of the
United States army, with Mrs. L.
A. Rhoden, of Roseburg, serving
as district chairman. Essays ot the
two local girls will be entered in
the state-wide and national con
test and should either be Judged
state winner she will be taken to
Portland and be given the honor
of christening one of the ships
