tion must be kept intact, Merriam
said, and it will be essential that
control centers, communication
lines and key personnel be tested
periodically. The protective di
vision which has received most
attention and training in. the past

Bob Scott Joins
U. S. Marine Corps
Bob Scott, night editor of the
Register-Guard for the past six
months, has been inducted into
the marine corps, Sergeant L. L.
Pittenger of the marine recruit
ing office, said Tuesday.
Scott is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Ernest Lee Scott of Salem. He
was a journalism student at the
University of Oregon. Following
a two week furlough he will re
port for duty at the San Diego
marine base.

a 12-mile road into the Smith
river area,, scene of a disastrous
forest fire several years ago, in
which 25,000 acres of Douglas fir
was burned.
The road into the area was
built in order tq facilitate the sal
vaging of sound timber, Floyd

fire was a crown fire and left I
