Thursday, Reedsport School Graduation Thursday REEDSPORT The 1842-43 achool year will close t Reeds port union high school with commencement exercises to be held Thursday evening, May 13, in the high school gymnasium. The speaker will be W. C. Jones, of the political science depart ment of the University of Oregon, and diplomas will be presented by Frank L. Taylor, of Reedsport, chairman of the local high school board. Phone 1217 Club Events In Reedsport Listed REEDSPORT. The Gardiner Literary club met last week with Mrs. Hugh Hamilton acting as hostess. The program was given by Mrs. R. H. Fields. Mrs. O. H. Hinsdale will be hostess for the next meeting of the club. Mrs. Leo Cary was hostess on Wednesday for the luncheon meet ing of St. Ann's Altar Society. At the meeting which followed, plans were made for a parish dinner to be given on the night of May 19 in the Rebekah hall in Reedsport Mrs. C. R. Elliott is chairman of the committee arranging the din ncr. Vacation school at St. Ann's church will begin on Monday, May 17, at 8 o'clock a. m., and children are asked to bring their lunches each day, as the classes will con tinue' Into the afternoon. The school session will last throughout Hie week. Rev. Mr. Killion will b assisted by Mrs. A. DeRyke and Miss Eva Richards. The troupe was touring army camps ol the Pacific Coast and stopped in Reedsport for a short time between visits to larger camps. Local boys home on furlough are Victor H. Pajari, A.M.M. 1-c, A.T.D. S. naval air station, Melbourne, Flor ida, who is visiting his father, Vano Pajari, and sister, Miss Ida Pajari; Edward Gerhard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Gerhard, of Gardiner; Jack Dunn, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Dunn and Bill Vian, son ol Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Vian, of Reedsport, all members of the U. S marine corps, and stationed at San Diego, CaL . . Mid-Week News In Monroe Reported MONROE. As Rev. and Mrs. Cookingham and a group of young people were returning Saturday evening from Eugene, they had a nartow escape from a serious ac cident Just before they reached a small bridge between Junction City and Monroe, a man driving a car with a trailer met them. As he crossed the bridge, his trailer struck the side, wrecking the trailer completely and throw ing the whole outfit into the ditch. Rev. Mr. Cookingham assisted the man from his car, and then pulled it from the ditch with his own machine, which would have been in the same case had .he reached the bridge a moment sooner. The man was not hurt and went on his way with only a wreck for a trail- The Student body of Monroe Union high school recently pre sented a movie entitled "The Buccaneers." Lieut. Darwin Carpenter, who has done service as a member of a bomber crew, was on furlough and visited his grandparents, Mr. I and Mrs. John Carpenter, last week. His parents, T, H. Carpen ter and Mrs. Blanche Carpenter, accompanied him from Portland Earle Eastburoe, called "Swede" by his friends, was graduated May 8 as an anti-aircraft gunner, with a first-class seaman's rating. He has been attending an armed guard school at a destroyer base. Earle, who is an alumnus of Mon roe Union high school, enlisted in January, and was sent to Boot Camp at Farragut, Ida., then later transferred to San Diego. The high school girls' glee club gave a concert Friday Evening in honor of their mothers. The public was also invited. The pro gram consisted of songs by the club, a reading by Eilene Moore, and two solos by Peggy Marie Hill. Eleanor Bailey. Margaret Kriet man, Harold Wright, and Miss Florence Kenzler represented the Christian Youth Group of Monroe Methodist church at the Eugene Youth conference Saturday.
