T. Hamilton, superintendent of Columbia school district No. 33, predicted. Physically the schools are a combination of government plans, the ingenuity of Wolf & Phillips, Portland architects, and a number of innovations conceived by W. L. VanLoan,' assistant superintendet, during 20 years of intermediate school teaching. Average cost of each structure was $50,000. In addition, the first year's salaries and supplies will total more than $200,000, it was estimated, to bring the cost of ln- Fage Twenty-ons structing the children of the proj ect's 10,000 families to nearly half a million dollars for 1943. Project Termed Unique "This school project Is unique in the country," Hamilton said, "because for the first time it is not necessary to adapt an existing plant and its methods to teaching a great number of children with different social and educational backgrounds. . "As nearly as Is humanly poss ible we are suiting -the physical mechanism and curriculum to the tremendous welfare and instruc tion prooiem involved. " VanLoan echoed his statement!. "It's something new, something that may revolutionize its par ticular field of education," the as sistant superintendent said. "But it's not a crack-pot scheme. We're following as closely as possible existing curricula and methods.
